Year 2 Homework Project for Autumn Term
Over the coming weeks, we would like you to complete at least one activity from ‘I enjoy reading, writing and speaking’ and at least one from ‘I enjoy Maths’. Once you have completed
these then the rest is up to you! The aim is to complete at least 30 points worth of learning over the term and then bring in what you have learnt in the final week of term. There is a
wide choice of activities to choose from to suit everyone but don’t leave it to the last minute!!
Seven ways to learn
What do I know and
understand?
2
Can I apply and show
what I know?
4
What can I question, compare
and analyse?
6
What can I create?
8
Can I evaluate and
make judgements?

Write a description of a famous
palace or castle. You should write in
longer sentences that show good use
of connectives and a range of
sentence starters.
Using a well known castle (fact or
fiction) create a fairy tale. You
could use existing characters or
make up your own.
Discuss why many castles are now in
ruins and the important work of
charities like English heritage who
protect them. Make a poster about
how to protect castles.
Visit a castle eg Windsor Castle,
take photographs and write facts
about it. Research on the internet
or use books if it is not possible to
visit.
I enjoy Maths
(You must complete
at least one
activity from this row)
Write some word problems based on
our topic of castles or Shakespeare
for a friend to solve. Make sure you
know the answers too!
Make a table of properties of
different castles eg heights, age,
size.
Write a ‘Day in the life of a…’ for
someone who lived or worked in a
castle eg cook/King. Write how it
would have been different for the
people you have chosen. What job
would you want/not want to do?
Make a drawbridge out of paper that
is strong enough to support a 1kg
weight. Look at pictures of real
bridges to find out what shapes and
structures are important.
Create a timeline showing when
castles were built. Highlight how
castles have changed over time.
Write a questionnaire and interview
your family on their favourite shops
in Westbury. Ask at least 10
questions and then draw a pictogram
or bar chart to show your findings.
I enjoy being scientific
List 5 different materials you can
see in your bedroom and say what
they are used for.
List five things that are
transparent and explain why
the object needs to have this
property.
Compare two objects in your home
that are made of different
materials. Explain what they are
made from and describe why these
materials were chosen.
Design and make an object using
different materials to show that you
understand why they are suitable for
their purpose.
Design an experiment to test
different types of paper to see
which is most absorbent. Carry out
your experiment and record your
results.
I enjoy painting, drawing and
visualising
Draw and label a map indicating
famous castles in the UK.
Draw or paint a view from a window
in your home. How has it changed
since you were born?
Research a castle floor plan. Look at
some floor plans of castles and show
the different parts eg wall, keep,
gatehouse.
Draw an aerial plan of Westbury
Leigh. Show where you live, the
school and other areas of interest.
Make a collage of somewhere in
Wiltshire. Evaluate it saying what
you would do to make it better next
time.
I enjoy being active and doing
hands-on things
Play Monopoly or another board game
linked to Geography or do a jigsaw
puzzle. Don’t forget to take a
picture and stick it in your homework
book!
Visit a museum and find out 5 facts
about Westbury.
Do three different activities eg
swimming, visiting family/place,
playing with friends. Compare and
explain which one you liked best and
why.
Make a 3D model of a castle.
Make a moving picture of a knight on
horseback jousting. Try to use a
sliding mechanism. Evaluate it saying
what you would do to make it better
next time.
I enjoy making and listening to
music
Listen to Wilts FM radio station and
see what you can find out.
Create a song about our topic. Use a
well known tune or make up your own.
Record your song if possible or sing
it to the class.
Ask two members of your family
what their favourite piece of music
is and ask them why they chose it.
Write and perform a rap to promote
a club in Westbury that you go to eg
Westbury Youth Football team.
Listen to 3 different types of music
and draw a picture for each one to
show how it makes you feel.
I enjoy learning by myself
Find out about food in Shakespeare’s
time. List the different types of
food.
Create a menu for Cinderella’s Ball in
the castle.
Choose a building or shop front in
Westbury – how would you improve
it? Draw how yours would look.
Make a tourist brochure about a
castle or palace of your choice.
Create a game eg snakes and ladders,
yes/no game about your favourite
area of our topic.
