Food, Nutrition and Wellness Locust Grove High School Mrs. K. Foster - Room # 404 Email: katherine.gilbert@henry.k12.ga.us Course Description: Food, Nutrition and Wellness is the foundational course in the nutrition and food science pathway. The focus of the course is centered on healthy food and lifestyle choices. Students will investigate the interrelationship of food, nutrition and wellness to promote good health. Mastery of standards is achieved through project-based learning, technical skills practice and leadership development activities of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will provide students with a competitive edge for either entry into the education global marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training. Pre-requisite for this course is advisor approval. Materials Needed & Classroom Expectation: Each student will be provided a paper three prong notebook. These notebooks will be kept in the classroom and will contain the following things to Syllabus, Restroom Passes, grade recording sheet and assignments that are given back (“Get Cooking” (these are our class warm-ups), “Notes”, “Assignments”, “Assessments” and “Projects &Labs”). They will need to bring in paper and pencil with them daily. They are welcome to leave paper in their notebook and use that on a daily basis to take notes. Some days students will be asked to bring in items for their food lab. Students will find out at the beginning of the week or end of the week before if they are being required to bring food items. If school supplies or food items can't be obtained, the student and/or parent will need to contact Mrs. Foster before the day of the lab. *ALL MATERIALS ON THIS SYLLABUS ARE SUGGESTED MATERIALS EXPECTATIONS FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS: 1) Complete daily classwork assignments 2) Participate in class discussions and ask questions 3) Participate constructively as a team member 4) Problem solve and accept challenges 5) Challenge yourself to continuously improve 6) Check your grades on Infinite Campus 7) Keep on top of work missed from absences 8) BYOD: Students may use electronic devices but only on days when we are using them for instructional purposes. * Students unable to follow directions or who have behavior problems will NOT be allowed to participate on days the class is engaged in food labs. Remind: Students in Food Nutrition and Wellness can stay up to date on everything in class with reminders of tests, quizzes and projects as well as information to help them succeed in food Nutrition and Wellness. Food and Nutrition only has one classroom set of textbooks “Guide to Good Food”. Each student will have access to a textbook and/or workbook to complete assignments during class. TEXTBOOKS DO NOT LEAVE THE CLASSROOM. Students who take books from the classroom will be required to pay for the book they have taken. The cost of the textbook is $78.00. Homework: Generally, homework is not assigned, however throughout the duration of the year projects will be assigned. These projects may require some extra time outside of class. Occasionally, some materials will need to be purchased for projects/labs. Information regarding these items will be sent home at a later date. If there are any problems obtaining these supplies please let Mrs. Foster know well before the assignment due date. Attendance & Make-up Policy: Attendance is crucial to our student’s success. A student who has been absent is responsible for meeting with Mrs. Foster the day they return to school to receive make-up work. The time during which make-up work must be completed should not exceed the number of days missed by the student. The student will have one week to make-up a missed test. Make-up work for students with an excused absence is eligible for maximum credit. Parents will be required to sign a make-up work form that acknowledges that the parent is aware the student has received their make-up work for the missed day/days from school. Late Projects will NOT be accepted and a zero will be entered in the grade book for the missing project. All other assignments will be subject to grade deduction. Twenty points will be taken off for everyday the assignment is late. Students who fail to turn in work will be required to fill out a missing work form with an explanation of why the work was not turned in on time. Grading: * All grades are calculated in Infinite Campus. The link can be found on the LGHS website. FINAL EXAM COURSE FINAL AVERAGE 20% 80% Semester 1 average 40% Semester 2 average 40% ___________________________________________________________ SEMESTER FINAL AVERAGE 100% Discipline Procedures: A four step discipline process will be used. The four steps include, warning, phone call/email home, behavior action plan, possible detention and on the fourth occurrence a referral to the appropriate administrator. All students are expected to behave as young professionals – respectful to everyone at all times. Behavior detrimental to learning and to which the instructor deems as inappropriate for the learning environment will not be tolerated. Food or drink will not be allowed in the classroom, except on days we have food labs. Water is permitted in class until there is an issue at which time Mrs. Foster can change the policy.
