Room 30 News Issue 16 December 19, 2012 Important Announcements: We are currently collecting used shoes/boots. If you are cleaning out your closets, please consider sending your used shoes to school. We hope to collect two large bags toward our Student Council Service Project by Thursday….thank you. Our Winter Book Exchange will be on December 19th and our Cozy Reading Day/Holiday Party will be on December 20th. Please purchase a NEW chapter book for your child to give during our book exchange. Every child will receive a new book. Boys should purchase a book for a boy and girls should purchase books of interest for a girl. Please send the book wrapped and labeled “boy” or “girl” on December 18th. If you are interested in purchasing more than one book, extra wrapped books are appreciated for those who may not be able to purchase one. LEARNING GOALS Language Arts: We will read about different holidays being celebrated and learn about the cultures and customs of different people. Our students will practice a fourth grade standard, reading/following multi-step Mrs. Cherveny instructions. My students will read holiday recipes and answer questions. If you and your child decide to make any of the recipes at home…I would love a sample!!! Language Works: Language Works Volume 7. Skills include working with the /oi/spelling pattern, spelling ie and ei words, identifying prefixes inter- and trans-, determining the differences between homophones, using commas with introductory elements, identifying/using prepositions, and making our writing more descriptive with similes. We will have a test this week. Math: Chapter 10, Multiplication. Our students will learn multiple strategies to find products. Students will multiply factors with 3 digits x 2 digits. Our students will also round factors to find estimated products. PLEASE work with your child so that he/she knows her basic facts “snappy quick”. This will greatly help him/her work efficiently and accurately on their math. Your child’s December multiplication timed test will be sent home this week. First in Math: Encourage your child to use their FIM license. This is a fun and easy way to practice multiplication facts along with other math concepts. and following them the first time will be our focus this coming week. Writing: We will write a Response to Literature for the story, “The Boss of the Plains.” STUDENTS OF THE MONTH December…stay tuned! Science: Our students are working in cooperative groups to research weathering, erosion, landslides, earthquakes, and volcanoes. They will present their research to the rest of the class. P.E.: We have P.E. this year with our new teacher, Coach Chindlund on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please remind your child to wear athletic shoes/clothes on these days. Library: Please remind your fourth grader to return his/her library books on Thursdays. He/she may renew a book that they are finishing. Science Garden: We will be in the science garden this week. Music: We will have music with Ms. CiCi the first week that we return to school in January. *Thanks to the families of LCM and our PTO for supporting our music and science garden programs! The 7 Habits of Happy Kids! Yikes…as we get closer to the holidays, we will review the habit, “Seek first to understand… then to be understood.” We currently have a chatty class of fourth graders. Listening to directions STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS Room 30 Representatives: Allison Lee and Leonardo Frasca Our Student Council is coordinating a “Gently Used” shoe drive. The goal is to have each class donate two trash sized bags of shoes. Please take some time to clean out your closets for a good cause! IMPORTANT REMINDERS At LCM we make, “Every Minute Count”. Please make sure to have your child at school, each morning on time. If you need to take your child out of school for an appointment, please make every effort to do so at the end of the day.
