Teaching Psychology in the Netherlands
Universities in Holland
The Dutch universities have a
reputation for being at the
forefront in the development and
introduction of new teaching
methods. Dutch education is both
efficiently run and internationally
oriented.
The Netherlands, with a population
of 16.5 m inhabitants, has:
14 research universities where
students are trained to be
scientists and 41 universities of
applied sciences where study
programmes have a professional
component.
In Holland one can get a Bachelor
degree at universities of applied
sciences. After completing
education at a Dutch university of
applied sciences one can follow
fast - track Master programmes:
Master of Arts or Master of
Sciences at a research university;
PhD degree at a research
university or at a special
international post-university
institution.
In the year 2009, 29.822 students
were studying psychology as a
major or minor on both BA/MA
levels.
After secondary education,
graduates move on to senior
secondary vocational
education or higher education
that includes:
- higher professional
education (HBO), lasts 3-4
years culminating with a
Bachelor diploma;
- university education (WO),
lasts 4-5 years and results in
a Master degree.
There are two main types of
universities: universities of
applied sciences known in
Dutch as ‘hogescholen’, and
NIP
