Dutch educational system Teaching Psychology in the Netherlands Universities in Holland The Dutch universities have a reputation for being at the forefront in the development and introduction of new teaching methods. Dutch education is both efficiently run and internationally oriented. The Netherlands, with a population of 16.5 m inhabitants, has: 14 research universities where students are trained to be scientists and 41 universities of applied sciences where study programmes have a professional component. In Holland one can get a Bachelor degree at universities of applied sciences. After completing education at a Dutch university of applied sciences one can follow fast - track Master programmes: Master of Arts or Master of Sciences at a research university; PhD degree at a research university or at a special international post-university institution. In the year 2009, 29.822 students were studying psychology as a major or minor on both BA/MA levels. After secondary education, graduates move on to senior secondary vocational education or higher education that includes: - higher professional education (HBO), lasts 3-4 years culminating with a Bachelor diploma; - university education (WO), lasts 4-5 years and results in a Master degree. There are two main types of universities: universities of applied sciences known in Dutch as ‘hogescholen’, and NIP The NIP (The Dutch Institute for Psychologist). Every practicing NIP psychologist has to be registered according to the professional code of the Dutch psychologist association. The N.I.P. has registration possibilities for the following fields of psychology: NIP First line psychologist NIP Children and youth psychology NIP Children and youth psychology specialist NIP Psychologist NIP Psychologist work and health NIP Psychologist mediator NIP Neurofeedback psychologist NIP Psychologist NIP BIG-registration - registration for all who work in the health care. Zeeland University The Zeeland University is situated in the south of Holland and is a relatively small university. It has 7 departments and about 4200 students. The department of Health and Welfare has 821 students. For most of these students psychology is obligatory. The programme consists mainly of courses in developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, psychopathology. A one year practice component is obligatory.
