This Topical Workshop aims to provide an overview of the regional hospital Ebola response with attention to human factors, maintaining vigilance and “lessons learned” applicable to planning for other emerging diseases. A break-out donning and doffing work group session will be held. The primary intended audience is regional Ebola response planners, but other health care workers and students are also welcome if space permits. CAPT Mead has been with NIOSH since his transfer from the U.S. Army to the U.S. Public Health Service in 1993. He is a registered Professional Engineer with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from The Wichita State University and an MS and PhD in Industrial Hygiene from The University of Oklahoma. Throughout his 26-yr career, CAPT Mead has applied engineering and personal protective concepts to protect workers against occupational exposures including chemical and biological warfare agents, industrial exposures, and infectious and chemical exposures within healthcare environments. For the past 13 years, his primary research focused on the protection of healthcare and emergency medical responders to protect against infectious exposures as well as exposures to hazardous drugs. Ken serves on multiple professional committees focused on Industrial Ventilation, Clean Space Design, and Healthcare Facility Design. He is also a member of the USP Expert Advisory Panel on hazardous drug exposures. Since August 2014, CAPT Mead’s involvement in the response to the current Ebola Epidemic includes protective design and work practice guidance for African Healthcare Facilities as well as being a member of multiple CDC Rapid Ebola Preparedness (REP) teams. The CDC REP teams travel to U.S. 2|Page Hospitals with designated Ebola Treatment facilities to conduct on-site assessments and provide guidance on the use of personal protective equipment, facility layout & planning, simulation training, hazardous waste management and related topics. In addition, CAPT Mead is a cadre member of the CDC Ebola Response Teams (CERT). The CERT teams are made up of experts in epidemiology, infection control, laboratory, and communications and they stand ready to deploy on short notice to any hospital in the United States with probable Ebola cases.
