October 7, 2015 To: TE Department Faculty Members who advise Undergraduate Students Overview: The advising work you do is very important, and we have talked about how all of us can continue to sharpen our advising skills each semester. The purpose of this note is to share several advising tips. We hope you will find this information helpful, but please do not hesitate to contact Jane if you have questions. Tip #1: Tips for ENROLLMENT OF TEACHER EDUCATION MAJORS/ ALL Education Majors CONCURRENT Enrollment in TE 100 and PSCI 110 All face-to-face sections of TE 100 are paired with selected sections of PSCI 110. (Note that TE 100-07 online**** is not paired.) Concurrent enrollment in the matched on-campus sections is expected; contact the Teacher Education Department to confirm legitimate exceptions. PSCI 110 / TE100 matched sections: TE100-01 (16742) and TE 100-02 (16275)** ARE MATCHED WITH PSCI-110-03 (12339) Instructor: Duffin TT 8:00am-9:15am TT 9:30am-10:45am TE100-05 (16284) and TE 100-06 (16287)** ARE MATCHED WITH PSCI-110-05 (17870) Instructor: Louishomme TT 12:30pm-1:45pm TT 2:00pm-3:15pm TE100-03 (16278) and TE 100-04 (16281)*** ARE MATCHED WITH PSCI-110-04 (12342) Instructor: Louishomme MW 2:55pm-4:10pm MW 1:25pm-2:40pm NOTE THE VITAL INFORMATION BELOW!!! **NOTE: Students who enroll in TE 100 sections 1, 2, 5, or 6 but do NOT enroll in the matched section of PSCI 110 because they have already completed PSCI 110 or an equivalent course must leave open the time slot immediately following their TE 100 class in order to attend school visits. Enrollment in TE 100 without concurrent enrollment in PSCI 110 will require TE Department permission. ***NOTE: Students who enroll in TE 100 Monday-Wednesday Afternoon sections 3 & 4 but who choose not to enroll in the matched section of PSCI 110 because they have already Completed PSCI 110 or an equivalent course should leave open the time slot immediately before their TE 100 class (1:25-2:40 PM) in order to attend school visits. Enrollment in TE 100 without concurrent enrollment in PSCI 110 will require TE Department permission. Tip #2: For K-12 and 7-12 students who are in programs that do NOT require TE 320 (ART, MUSIC, CDIS, and HEALTH and HEALTH/ PE), a permit will be needed for them to take TE 319. When requesting a permit, make sure that the student’s degree audit shows that he/she has been admitted into Teacher Education. Tip #3: Special Admissions Processes for ALL Students Pursuing one or more teaching endorsements: Admission to Teacher Education Undergraduate education majors who are pursuing programs within the Teacher Education Department should work to be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program by the middle of their second year of study. Late deciding and transfer students should work to gain admission as soon as possible. The first key step is to complete the Application for Admission Form. Contact the Educator Certification Office (formerly known as KASE) in the COE Bldg./308-865-8937. o The three key components of the admission process are as follows: (a) the PRAXIS CORE, which is a test of basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills; (b) the Service Learning Project; and (c) maintaining a UNK grade point average that is 2.75 or higher for students in the 2013 Catalog and forward (2.50 for students in prior catalogs). o Students should register for the PRAXIS CORE by going online to www.ets.org. ALL STUDENTS WILL TAKE THE PRAXIS CORE AND ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO TAKE THE PRAXIS II CONTENT EXAM ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR ENDORSEMENT AREA(S) TO BE CERTIFIED and can register for this content exam at the ETS website listed above. Information about specific content exams to be used with each of the endorsement areas may be found at http://www.ets.org/praxis/ne/requirements. Ideally, the PRAXIS II CONTENT Exam should be taken just prior to student teaching. Admission to Student Teaching (TE 400) Participation in one instructional workshop outlining the application and placement process is mandatory for all students applying to student teach in the FALL 2016. Students may choose to attend one of the following workshops that will be offered as follows: o Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 8 AM - 9 AM (COE C218) o Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 4 PM - 5 PM (COE C210) o Saturday, Nov. 14 at 10 AM - 11 AM (COE C214) o Thursday, Nov. 19 at 4 PM - 5 PM (COE C214) Advisors should check each advisee’s degree audit to assure that all coursework prior to student teaching will be completed, and that students will have sufficient credit hours to graduate at the end of student teaching. If possible, students should take TE 306, TE 319, and TE 320 in the same semester. Preferably, these courses would be taken the semester just prior to student teaching. Any questions about the student teaching experience should be directed to Ann Knipping in the Educator Certification Office. Ann’s phone number is 308-865-8416. Tip #4, Other Advising Tips/Critical Reminders/Permit Processes: For Sophomores: Get admitted to Teacher Education (look at audit for milestones). ENG 425 & MUS 330 conflict with the Content Block & Lit. Block so take these early. Online sections of TE 343/344/345 & 312/313: are for Early Childhood students assigned to Chilene. TE 311 aligns with MATH 230 and TE 313 (03) or (04) - Friday sections. a. Students getting error messages are LIKELY not putting in the correct FIELD section. Have them call 865-8527 to resolve the problem right away. TE 312/313 should be taken the final semester prior to student teaching- use permit forms from Jane. Be sure the student keeps a copy. Inform him/her that he permits may not be in until the end of the first week of enrollment.
