The Institute for Creative Arts Practice and Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums are pleased to invite
proposals for applications for funding to create new work for the occasion of the exhibition Victor
Pasmore: In Three Dimensions at the Hatton Gallery (06 February - 09 May 2015). The particular
focus of the brief is to rematerialise an Exhibit, the immersive installation work made at the Hatton
Gallery in 1957 by Victor Pasmore in collaboration with Richard Hamilton. The work was constructed
out of sheets of coloured Perspex suspended in a grid formation in the large white Edwardian gallery
at the Hatton. It has since been recognised as a landmark event in the history of installation art and
exhibition design, and was recently remade for an exhibition at the ICA in London.
For logistical reasons, an Exhibit has never been redisplayed in the Hatton Gallery after its first
showing in 1957. However, it is an essential part of the story of Victor Pasmore’s development from
two-dimensional painting to three-dimensional constructions, which is the focus of the current
exhibition at the Hatton Gallery, Victor Pasmore: In Three Dimensions.
The work resulting from this commission will use innovative methods to communicate an impression
of an Exhibit in the gallery which originally housed it. To reflect how central it was to Pasmore’s
practice to work across disciplines, proposals are encouraged with a multi-discipline approach. The
key aim of the commission is to produce new work that helps to build relationships between
creative practitioners across the University.
The resulting work will be launched in early May, to coincide with the final week of the exhibition
Victor Pasmore: In Three Dimensions. It will then remain open for a further two weeks to coincide
with the Late Shows on Saturday 16th May, 7-11pm.
One award, up to £1,000 value, will be made. Applications are invited from Newcastle University
students and staff. Collaborations between staff and students from different disciplines are
particularly encouraged. Any undergraduate or postgraduate wishing to apply for the commission
should get the prior agreement from a member of staff who will act as project mentor. Their
details should be included in the application form The project briefing at 4.30pm on Tuesday 17th
March 2015 will allow students and staff to meet and discuss ideas.

This Institute for Creative Arts Practice funded commission invites proposals that respond creatively
to the challenge of rematerialising an Exhibit for a contemporary audience. The resulting work will
engage audiences by enabling them to better visualise what an Exhibit would have been like to
experience. The work must be able to coexist with the wall-based works by Pasmore already on
display in the gallery, and maintain the access route through the gallery. It must be able to be
installed in one working day.
Background
Victor Pasmore: In Three Dimensions originated as an Arts Council touring exhibition, which has been
adapted and added to by the curatorial team at the Hatton Gallery to reflect aspects of Pasmore’s
career which were specific to his time in Newcastle. Whilst teaching as Master of Painting in the Fine
Art department here, Pasmore undertook a number of innovative and large-scale projects requiring
collaboration with other creative practitioners: within Fine Art, with other departments and beyond
the university. Chief among these was an Exhibit, a collaboration with Richard Hamilton, Fine Art
students and the School of Printing. Another example was Pasmore’s contribution to the design of
housing for Peterlee New Town in County Durham. Pasmore also organised exhibitions which
encouraged the combination of art, design and engineering, such as Art, Machine and Environment
at the Laing Art Gallery which featured work by architects Alison and Peter Smithson and Ryder &
Yates.
