Writing before Kurzweil 3000
Jayden is a 10 year old boy who is in 4th
grade who has a Severe Emotional
Disturbance. He is a visual learner who
enjoys working with technology, hands
on activities and participating in small
groups. Jayden receives his education in
a self-contained classroom with an 8:1:1
ratio at an alternative school district.
The curriculum barriers he faces include
above accessing grade level reading
materials, writing mechanics: organizing
ideas, appropriate spacing on lines and
spelling.

Writing with Kurzweil 3000
Jayden’s goals were to read
informational text above Jayden’s
reading level with use of assistive
technology, complete the writing
process to create an informational
writing piece and a narrative writing
piece and relate science curriculum
topic to prior knowledge and make
connections to personal life. The
assistive technology I decided to use
with Jayden to meet these goals were
Kurzweil 3000 software program, digital
books including Raz Kids and teacher
created PowerPoint, as well as Pictello,
an iPad book creator app.
With
implementation of
the SETT
Framework
(Student,
Environment,
Tasks and Tools)
my student was
able to access
grade level
curriculum and
meet Common
Core Standards
through use of
Assistive
Technology in the
areas of Science,
Reading and
Writing.
