State/Collaborative: Indiana Date submitted: November 2, 2018 Submitted by: Kathy Johnson Progress toward goals for current reporting period: October 1 Website Launched (soft roll-out): http://facultycollaboratives.uc.iupui.edu/ October 14, 2015 Indiana Faculty Collaboratives Steering Committee Meeting: Agenda: 1) Welcome (TJ) 2) Hub Update (TJ) 3) National Update (Kathy) 4) Faculty Fellow Updates a. Feb: Indiana Faculty Collaborative Conference In general meeting went well and there is lots of enthusiasm for the February 26 convening. We are particularly excited about the projects shared by Heather, Beth, Elaine and Keith. Kathy Johnson had a VERY PRODUCTIVE AND EXCITING conversation with Bill McKinney, now with Indiana University Office of Academic Affairs, regarding how he might begin to 1 October 23, 2015 FC Progress Reports October 23, 2015 October 30, 2015 be connected to this project. Bill plans to attend the FALCON conference to hear the upcoming session on the Faculty Collaboratives project, and to meet with TJ and Kathy for lunch. Leading idea at the moment: Bill will plan to lead work that stems from Debra Humphrey’s presentation at the February 26 convening regarding fostering dialogues between employers and educators aligned with this work. This hopefully will lead to a LEAP Educator-Employer convening in 2016-17. Faculty Fellows Meet with TJ Rivard to plan session for FALCON conference in November Recap of meeting: 1) Our session will be based on a conversation rather than a presentation. 2) TJ will open with a brief description of the Faculty Collaboratives and the Hub. 3) Fellows will send to TJ a brief bio and 4 to 5 sentence description of the project 4) TJ will prepare a brief page on the fellows with the project descriptions 5) Fellows will prepare a three or four minute presentation focused on the personal side of why you got involved. It might include: a. What interested you in becoming a fellow for the Faculty Collaborative? b. What about it ignites your passion? c. What are your hopes for the project? 6) Fellows will present in alpha order after TJ a. Keith Anliker b. Ange Cooksey c. Elaine Cooney d. Beth Goering e. Heather King f. Michael Wetzstein 7) At the session, we will attempt to get into a conversation with the attendees about their interests in participating. How can they get involved? a. Gather names and e-mail addresses. b. Possibly create a listserv for them? Kathy Johnson will serve as note-taker Registration opens for February meeting. Survey has been linked to the registration process to try to begin to gauge how familiar registrants are with: LEAP, DQP, Tuning, VALUE rubrics, and GEMS (response options: Never heard of it, Have read a little about it, Have a fairly deep understanding of it, Have applied the concepts in my discipline). This is intended to give us a baseline “snapshot” and hopefully will align well with the data that Becky Dolinsky will be gathering. Please describe any current challenges you are facing in meeting your FC Project goals: 2 FC Progress Reports We continue to be very concerned about the Faculty Fellow connected to the VALUE work, and are currently trying to explore ways of replacing him with another Fellow (recruited from the steering committee) who’s been involved in assessment work at Purdue North Central. We were thinking that we might use the work plan submitted to AAC&U as the basis for terminating his involvement after year 1 (if it’s as off-base as we fear that it might be). We also have concerns about one of the faculty fellows working on the DQP as her project is overly ambitious. We are working with her to try to scale the project back. We’re also having second thoughts regarding our approach to “locking down” our Canvas site. We are consulting with our colleagues in the IT office regarding treating the Canvas site as an open-access MOOC, rather than as something that needs constant oversight and is difficult to sustain. Suggestions or Questions for AAC&U FC Staff: Not a question – more of an FYI. IUPUI and Ivy Tech Central Indiana are delighted to be part of the GEMS Pathway project and we have included Heather King (ITCC Faculty Fellow working on GEMS), TJ Rivard (IU System Rep), Marcus Kolb (ITCC System Reb) and Kathy Johnson (IUPUI administrative lead) on that project to help ensure that there is synergy/alignment with the Faculty Collaboratives work. Please update your goals for the next reporting period: November – Conference task force reviews submissions for Annual Convening and finalizes schedule November – revised working deadline for drafts of Canvas materials related to Fellow porojects December 2015 – Begin to implement Beth Goering’s Communication Strategy to expand awareness and engagement with Collaborative February 2016 – Statewide Convening, Year 2 of Fellow Projects begins March 2016 - Engage advisory board to provide guidance for project and to shepherd assessment efforts 3
