Classroom Procedures and Expectations

PROCEDURES AND EXPECTATIONS
MISS METZGAR
Procedures are a part of life. We follow procedures when we go to the movies, eat at a
restaurant, or fly on an airplane. The reason we have procedures is so people can
function in society knowing the proper and appropriate way to do things. Procedures can
make things run more efficiently, help people to be more successful, and also make things
safer. Think of what would happen if people didn’t follow the procedure at a stop sign or
red light! This classroom also has its own set of procedures. These procedures help to
establish our classroom culture, help us stay organized, and keep everyone safe. When
everyone follows the procedures, our class becomes safer, calmer, and a better
environment in which to learn. Although you may not remember them at first, please do
your best to follow the procedures below. Let’s all choose to have a great year!

Locker Area and Desks




Keep your locker area clean at all times. Failure to do so may result in a detention during which you clean your
area.
You have been provided with a bin to use for papers, notebooks, workbooks…etc. ANY LOOSE PAPER WILL BE
THROWN AWAY.
Keep all books in your locker area. You may place your materials in the desks only when you have class in the
8th grade room.
There is to be NO FOOD around the locker area or inside the desks.
Chromebooks


Bring chrome books to all subjects unless otherwise noted.
Place chrome books on black shelving unit when not in use.
Transitions


Always walk quietly and respectfully in the hallways.
Wait along wall for teacher—never enter a classroom until teacher is present.
How to Enter the Classroom
Calmly and quietly enter the room and take your assigned seat. Immediately get to work at your desk. There will always
be something for you to do. In religion you will have a reflection piece each morning. In science, there will be a prompt
on the Smart Board each day. Please do not enter the classroom if the door is closed, or if there is not a teacher present.
1. Take out any homework due that day and place it in the turn-in box. Most homework will be digital, but there
will be paper homework on occasion.
2. Copy tonight’s homework into your Student Agenda.
If there is no homework, the board will say “No
Homework” and you need to copy that into your agenda.
3. Read the Objectives to see what you will be working on in class that day.
4. Complete the journal activity that will be posted on the board.
5. Read, tweet, or review notes if you have extra time.
Turning in Papers
Homework needs to be handed in the day it is due. In most cases, homework should not be handed in ahead of time
since it may get lost. Place homework in the turn in box during your warm-up activity. All homework should be turned in
within the first five minutes of class. Any digital homework must be turned in by 8:00.
Sharpening a Pencil
Please sharpen pencils before class begins. If necessary, you may sharpen your pencils during class but not while the
teacher is speaking. Use your own judgment to determine a good time. Only one student at a time is allowed at the
pencil sharpener. For emergencies there will be pencils placed in the “sharpened” container. If you take a sharpened
pencil, make sure you drop of your dull pencil in the “sharpen please” tin.
Using Your Laptop in Class
You are expected to bring your laptops to school and class each day fully charged. We will be using the laptops in class
on a regular basis. Please remember that we have laptops in class to help us learn, not to distract us. Playing games or
accessing social media sites is strictly prohibited. Websites that can be used will be listed on the classroom Schoology
account.
Using the Bathroom
Please use the restroom before class. Emergencies happen and you will have three passes for the semester. You do not
need to ask permission to use the bathroom; however, do not go during direct instruction time (while the teacher is
talking). Only person is allowed out of the classroom at a time to use the bathroom. If you need to use the bathroom
during class, put the bathroom pass on your desk, and neatly fill in the date, your name, your destination, and the time in
the Student Sign-Out Log Book next to the door. When you return, hang the bathroom pass back up and write down the
time you got back in the Log Book. Please remember to wash your hands before returning to class.
Using the Classroom Library
There are many books in this classroom that have been purchased by your teacher. Please treat each and every book
with respect. If you would like to take a book home, please sign it out on the clipboard near the books. When you finish
the book, return it to the box in which you found it (they are organized by genre and topic) and sign it back in.
Using Classroom Supplies
This classroom is well stocked with supplies to help you complete your classwork. In the black paper trays you can find
white lined paper, graph paper, computer paper, In the clear tubs you will find colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, tape,
highlighters, expo markers and erasers, index cards, and rulers. Please return all supplies back to their appropriate
container when you are done using them. You may use the blue caddies to keep supplies in while you are using them,
but they must be put back when you are done.
When the Teacher Wants Your Attention
When I want your attention, I will call out:

Ba na na na na na na na (Students: Batman!)

Class (Students: Yes)

Stop (Students: Collaborate and Listen)

5... 4… 3… 2… 1…
By the time I am done counting back or you respond, you attention needs to be on the teacher, waiting for further
instructions.
When You Want the Teacher’s Attention
If you need to get the teacher’s attention, raise your hand and patiently wait for her to respond. If you are sick or it is an
emergency, you may interrupt the teacher if she is speaking.
How to Set Up a Paper
Each assignment must have four things:
1.
Your first and last name
2.
The date
3.
Class
4.
The assignment (Example: 1.1 Section Review Questions)
If You Finish Your Work Early
If you finish your work before others are done, there are several things that you may do.

First, check to make sure that you followed all directions and completed the entire assignment.

Review your notes, the more you practice, the better you know it!

Read.

Start working on tonight’s science homework.

Visit our Schoology page.

Tweet (on the classroom wall, of course).
Classroom Discussions
All students are asked to participate in classroom discussions. Your teacher wants to hear what you have to say!
However, please make all questions and comments relevant to the current discussion. If your question is off the topic,
write it down and ask it later. Students should raise their hand to volunteer an answer or ask a question. Please refrain
from shouting out ideas without being called on.
Lab Behavior
A good portion of the science curriculum involves hands-on lab activities. Appropriate behavior includes carefully reading
and following all instructions, asking questions if you’re not sure about something, wearing safety glasses if indicated,
and absolutely no joking or fooling around. Certain labs may involve other precautions, which I will go over with you as
needed. ANY inappropriate behavior will NOT be tolerated for the safety of everyone in the room. Alternative
assignments can be arranged if needed.
End of Class Dismissal
The teacher dismisses the class, not the clock. Do not start packing up your materials in anticipation of the end of class.
Class is over when I say: “Have a great day!” Before you leave, take a look at the floor around you. Pick up any items on
the floor (whether they belong to you or not) and throw them in the trash if necessary. Make sure to push in your chair
before you leave and take ALL of your belongings with you.
