Strive for your best! Pace Yourself! Don’t waste time! Ancient Civilizations Project Imagine that you live in a new age of time travel. You have been recruited to test a new mode of time transportation. You will be making your trial run to the ancient civilization of your choice. What do you think you will find there? How different will ancient times be as compared to how you live today? While you are exploring this ancient period, you will be keeping a personal journal. You will need to include lots of details so you can share your experiences effectively. Using your notes, you will recreate an accurate portrayal of life in that time and place. As you set off on your journey, keep in mind the following criteria to make note of: 1. Location and time period: Where and when are you, including… -map -time period/era - environment (terrain, climate, animal life) 2. Economy: How a civilization met their physical needs, including… -food -homes -clothing -health -occupations -technology -trade -inventions 3. Social: How a civilization met their emotional needs, including… -social structure -family -language -education -religion -sports/recreation -beliefs -celebrations -arts 4. Politics: How a civilization lived together as a group, including… -political structure -government and citizenship -defense and war -legal system Also keep in mind that your journal will serve as your notes with which to compose your published piece. You will publish your information in 5 formats: o “A Day in the Life”: You will incorporate all of your notes into a fictional story about a person who lived during that time. You will start your story at dawn and end with your character going to bed. o Fact Cards: You will need to complete 6 fact cards about your ancient civilization. Each fact card will be about an object/an invention/celebration, etc… included in your story. For example, if you were writing about Ancient China and you had included a kite in your story then you would have a fact card that explains its significance. o Map (with a legend): A map defining the boundaries of your ancient civilization and how it has changed from then to now (grown or shrunk). You could show this change on one map or on a series of maps. o Artifact: A model of an important object/invention whose effect is still being felt today. For example, for Ancient China, you could make an example of a Chinese kite using materials that were used back then. Another option would be to make a diorama of a community/house, etc… This artifact must also be included in your story. o Bibliography: You will document your research by creating a bibliography (refer to the subsequent sheet, “Recording Sources of Information”) o Presentation of your Ancient Civilization Project
