Subject ENGLISH GRADE FORM ONE Subject: Period 7 Time 40MINS Number of students On Register Present 54 54 ENGLISH Topic: PRONUNCIATION-HOMOPHONES Objectives: By the end of the lesson the learner should be able to recognise words that are pronounced the same way but have different spellings and meaning. Skills: Listening and speaking, writing. Knowledge: Homophones are English words pronounced the same way but spelt differently with different meaning. Attitude: The learners should demonstrate willingness to explore online pronunciation of different words using online dictionary. Classroom configuration for ICT use Time required Whole class, individual work& Group work using laptops. 40mins Knowledge Required before the lesson Basic understanding that, pronunciation of English words is not necessarily associated with the way the word is spelt. Several laptops for group work Activity worksheet for group work using laptops and individual home work LESSON PLAN ACTIVITIES The lesson is divided into 3 main activity stages – Introduction, Main Activities, Conclusion Lesson Activities Time Teacher activities Introduction 5mins Ice-breaker. Recap & check on students’ pre-knowledge of homophones. Introducing students knowledge to homophones. Student activities Observe the ice- breaker and join in. Define homophone and give a few examples. Ask the students questions on what homophones are? And a few examples of the same. Main Activities 20mins New Knowledge The teacher organizes the learners to four small groups each with a laptop. lays down the rules, appoints a secretary another student to operate the laptop. ACTIVITY 1. Each group is expected to complete the activity and presentation. The teacher goes round assisting the learners how to go about the task. ACTIVITY2: similar process is repeated as instructed. Teacher goes round assisting the learners. Reinforcement 3mins The teacher asks the group secretaries to prepare their group presentations. both the teacher and the learner evaluate the task/responses from each group. Assessment Is the student able to recap and link up learnt knowledge about spelling in English words. Is the student able to define homophone and give a few examples. The students sit in their groups and take up their role to complete the task. The student in charge operates the online dictionary for the rest to get actual pronunciation types the word and clicks for pronunciation. other students in the group also use manual dictionary. Is the student able to get the right pronunciation from online dictionary? After which the completed task is presented. The learners organise themselves to complete the task given using online dictionary. Each group presents their answers in the given by the teacher. Are the students able to capture the right pronunciation and give the appropriate answers in their group discussions? Reflection 5mins Oral activity for the class. the teacher asks the students to read a short passage filling answers to the blanks. the teacher is in control. Conclusion 5mins Teacher presents a summary of the learnt concept on the topic learnt. Assessment 2mins The teacher issues a typed assignment to each student for individual working. And follow-up.
