• Nationalism is a Janus-faced creed, which turns back to
an idealized past in order to gather the mythological
resources with which to leap forward into a politically
independent future. In Joyce’s own day, W. B. Yeats is a
prime example of this facing-both-ways. The Ireland of
the time was itself a mixture of the new and the old, as
the forces of modernization flourished alongside cultural
forms which were often quite traditional. The place was
both European and a colony, both advanced and
underdeveloped. Modernism often thrives in this kind of
time-warp, and is as double-visaged as nationalism.
