This thesis aims at yielding insights into the way American and Vietnamese people communicate
during their family disputes, to find out similarities and differences between these two cultures. Combining
approaches of cross-cultural pragmatics and discourse analysis with data of movie dialogues, this study
compares two cultures’ family disputes on scrutinizing three stages: initiation, escalation and termination.
To achieve the goal, the thesis sets itself the task of exploring strategies family members apply to
achieve their goals, the language they use for each strategy and formats of their disputes for each stage. It has
confirmed that dispute is a dynamic interactional process which inaugurates with “arguable utterance- initial
opposition” model, then progresses with mutual oppositions between disputants and ends with certain
termination formats.
Its findings have disclosed similarities between American and Vietnamese family members in
disputing topics and prominently high ratio of unsolvable disputes. Data analysis also exhibits differences
between two cultures in verbalizing each escalating strategy, and dispute termination formats.
Researching on family disputes provides a more comprehensive view of human communication, which
is not only formed by consensus but also confrontation. This thesis’s results, therefore, are beneficial to
understand cultures and also have particular merit for pragmatic studies and foreign language learning.

This dissertation is an attempt to achieve three objectives: (i) identifying the areas of English
pronunciation likely to be committed erroneously by Êđê learners; (ii) establishing similarities and differences
between English and Êđê sounds in connected speech; (iii) offering solutions for the improvement of English
pronunciation required of Êđê learners.
The main issues raised in the dissertation are (i) ‘Is it the fact that both similarities and differences
between English and Êđê sounds in connected speech be thought as the cause of errors committed by Êđê
learners?’; (ii) if so, what areas of English pronunciation are needed to be improved for Êđê learners? and (iii)
how to solve these problems encountered by Êđê learners.
The major methods employed in the dissertation are (i) the quasi-experimental method for the
independent variable and dependent variable as well as for identifying the areas of English pronunciation needed
to be improved for Êđê learners for communication purposes (ii) the descriptive and contrastive analysis
methods for establishing the similarities and differences between English and Êđê sounds in connected speech
and for describing the sound system of the two languages (iii) and, the action research method for improving
English pronunciation required to Êđê learners.
Some major findings of the research have been obtained, including the establishment of the similarities
and differences of the sounds in connected speech of English and Êđê, common errors committed by Êđê
learners in English pronunciation, and the improvement of English pronunciation for Êđê learners in some areas
identified. The dissertation also presents the implication for teaching and learning English pronunciation for Êđê
learners.
