The following opportunities have come into the West Guidance Office
recently. Additional information can be obtained in the Guidance Office.
Remember the importance of meeting deadlines for applications for
admissions and scholarships: If your application requires information to be
provided by your counselor or if a recommendation is needed, be sure to
make arrangements at least one week in advance.
Horatio Alger Association Scholarship-The Horatio Alger Association
provide financial assistance to students who have financial need and have
exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity.
The eligibility criteria to be considered for National Scholarships, National
Scholarship Finalist Awards, and Horatio Alger State Scholarship Programs
are as follows:
 Enrolled full time as a high school senior
 Intend to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution
(students may start their studies at a two-year institution and then
transfer to a four-year institution)
 Critical financial need ($50,000 or less adjusted gross income per family
is preferred, if higher explanation must be provided);
 Involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
 A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0; and
 United States citizenship
 Students may submit an online application and supplemental materials
at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships by October 30.
Deadline: October 30
Outstanding Students of America-Scholarships program available for
high school seniors. Scholarship applications may be copied from website
www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com. For more information call

Deadline: October 10
First Freedom Student Competition-This national essay contest offers
students an opportunity to compete for a $3,000, $1,500 and $750 award.
This year participating students will examine religious freedom - - its’
history, current importance and relevance in their lives. For more details on
the topic, competition and guidelines: visit www.firstfreedom.org then
click on the red button First Freedom Student Competition.
Deadline: November 23
Wendy’s High School Heisman-Scholarship for both male and female
students who excel in academics, athletics, and student leadership.
 Full time senior
 30 average
 At least one school sponsored sport
Submit an online application by October 1st at www.wendysheisman.com.
Online application must be reviewed and confirmed online by your
counselor.
Deadline: October 1
School Representatives
Many school representatives are scheduled to visit Hazelwood West during
future weeks. Be sure to check the bulletin board in the Guidance Office
for a list of visiting colleges and universities. You will need to obtain a pass
from your guidance counselor in order to attend any session. Passes must
be obtained at least one day before the scheduled visit. THE FALL
SESSIONS ARE LIMITED TO SENIORS ONLY!

ACT/SAT Prep Sessions
Students in the Hazelwood School District, preparing for their college
entrance exams, are encouraged to attend prep sessions to increase their
test score and to receive reimbursement of the ACT Registration Fee.

If you are interested in one of the military services, it is easy to meet with
one of the representatives during lunch in the West Commons according to
the following schedule:
2nd Wednesday of each Month: Coast Guard
1st & 3rd Thursday of each Month: Marines
1st & 3rd Wednesday of each Month: Missouri National Guard
