Five-Day Small Group Phonics Intervention Routines
Day 1
1. Phonemic Warm-Up: 3 min.
2. Review Sound Spelling Cards & Non-Decodable High Frequency Words (5 min)
3. Introduce New Sound Spelling Card: 2 min
4. HM Tool Kit Phonics Lesson (if applicable): 10 min
5. Guided practice of blending words from the decodable text (magnetic letters, letter cards,
whiteboard, etc.) & practice reading those words in sentences: 10 min
Day 2
1. Phonemic Warm-Up: 3 min
2. Review Sound Spelling Cards & Non-Decodable High Frequency Words (5 min)
3. Guided Reading of first segment of decodable reader (locate and discuss words with the phonetic
pattern): 10 min
4. Practice reading and writing words from decodable text (whiteboards, magnetic letters, etc.): 10
min
Day 3
1. Phonemic Warm-Up: 3 min
2. Review Sound Spelling Cards & Non-Decodable High Frequency Words (5 min)
3. Guided Reading of second segment of decodable reader (locate and discuss words with the
phonetic pattern): 10 min
4. Practice reading and writing words from decodable text (whiteboards, magnetic letters, etc.): 10
min
Day 4
1. Partner read the decodable text: 10 min
4. Do a making words activity with this phonetic pattern (include words from the text and new
words): 20 min
Day 5
5 minute individual quick assessment for progress monitoring:
1.
Read 5 words with this phonetic pattern in isolation: 1 min
2. Write or build 5 words with this phonetic pattern: 3 min
3. Read 1 selected page from the decodable text: 1 min
** Bi-Weekly: Assess using DIBELS progress monitoring passages in lieu of quick assessment**
