University of Houston Charter School: Excavators Rationales
Morning Meeting: Through consistent class meetings students are given the autonomy to become selfdisciplined, responsible individuals. We use this time for reflective conversations and preparation for the
day. This week we will continue our class routines and schedules.
Students are picked each week to carry out leadership duties.
ELA (English Language Arts): Our main focus will be on blending the sounds, high frequency words, and
reading decodable text from our Journeys curriculum student books.
Handwriting: We are writing sentences that include high frequency words and correct punctuation. We
are using sentence starters as we learn. We are practicing sentence completion, proofreading, and
correct spelling.
Math: Continued this week we will expand our skills in addition and subtraction relationships.
Understanding Fact Families.
Science: Students will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and document the caterpillars as
they go through each stage.
Social Studies: Students will learn start researching Cinco de Mayo for the K/1 Market in May.
How to Help Your Child: First graders should be reading 30 minutes or more at home. While you are
cleaning, cooking, or relaxing. Have your child read to you to help build fluency and accuracy skills.
Please practice vocabulary words, spelling, and sentence framing with your child at home.
