IB Math Studies Chapter 2 – Descriptive Statistics Basics
Name:_____________________________________________Period:____________
The first half of Chapter 2 is review of material that should be pretty light but necessary, nonetheless, as
we turn our focus toward statistics. Hence, you are responsible for completing the following work
independently. Then, I can focus my time teaching the second half of the chapter, which includes a type
of graph that is most likely new to you and which includes some fairly detailed, yet very useful, GDC
procedures. Please note the expected problems for you to complete – there will be a homework quiz
based on this work 11/5/2015.
Read p.44-46 while making note of the following vocabulary words.
Vocabulary:
 Qualitative data versus quantitative data
 Discrete data
 Continuous data
 Population
 Sample
 Random sample
 Biased sample versus representative
#2.1 p.46-47 Ex. 2A: 1-2
Read p.47 about how to organize a frequency table.
#2.2 p.47-48 Ex. 2B: 6
Read p.48-49 about how to organize data in a grouped frequency table.
Each class of a grouped frequency table has an upper and lower boundary – it is the “mean of the
upper value from one class and the lower value from the following class”. Read p. 50 for two
examples of finding the upper and lower boundary of a class.
#2.3 (Part 1) p.49 Ex. 2C : 1b (hint: use a class size of 10) + p.51 Ex. 2D: 1
Read p. 51 about how to draw a frequency histogram.
#2.3 (Part 2) p.52-53 Ex. 2E: 6 (hint: again, use a class size of 10)
Read p.54 while reviewing the following vocabulary words.
Vocabulary:
 Mean
 Median
 Mode
There are functions on the GDC that make finding these values super easy – I will show you these
later. In the meantime, just use the GDC to help with the calculation of the mean.
#2.4 (Part 1) p.55-56 Ex. 2F: 4-6
