The Faculty of Creative Industries are seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Graphic Communication who is able to offer
specialist skills within digital communication, web design and design for mobile and tablet. The post holder will be expected
to contribute to the delivery of an effective teaching and scholarly experience for the University’s students. In particular the
role will involve the organisation and delivery of key modules on the Graphic Communication course, and potentially some
involvement within the other Design related courses at USW. Experience of teaching Graphic Communication related
subjects at a Higher Education level is required, along with the ability to deliver inspirational teaching of digital design
including design for web and mobile platforms.
The terms and conditions of the post (including grade and salary) will be those of the University of South
Wales.

Responsible to:
Academic Manager in Graphics, Advertising and Illustration
Main Purpose of Job:
The role holder will be expected to contribute to the delivery of an effective teaching and scholarly experience for the
University’s students, and to help further its ambitions in research and knowledge transfer, in particular the role will
involve the organisation, overseeing and teaching into key studio based modules within the discipline of Graphic
Communication and also when appropriate Advertising Design. This will include teaching to all year groups, following
quality assurance procedures, coordinating with other academic and technical colleagues. The job role will need to
specialise in design for screen, web and mobile, social media and have a full understanding of the contemporary
Graphic design and communication industry.
Principal Responsibilities and Duties:
 To teach into established courses of Graphic Communication: including teaching, engaging, informing and
inspiring students through lectures, tutorials, seminars, studio practice, etc. and to contribute to the
maintenance and development of existing modules and awards including the development, delivery and
assessment of studio based modules with particular emphasis on design for screen, web, and mobile. To
build on and support the Academic manager in developing an established but adaptable programme of study.
 To liaise with the Academic Manager and course leader on the development of curriculum.
 To foster and maintain links with the industry sector at a regional and national level and to develop and
maintain links with other awards in the Faculty and University.
 To actively promote the BA (Hons) Graphic Communication course in conjunction with other University of
South Wales courses and be responsible for annual monitoring of modules and engage with quality
assessments, e.g. subject review and module evaluation.
 To attend subject boards as required.
 To develop the on-line provision of the course.
 To assist in the presentation of student work in annual exhibitions at the University and at other venues in the
wider community.
 To utilise effective assessment instruments and ensure adequate, detailed feedback to students is provided.
 To participate in professional duties such as faculty open days and other recruitment activities as appropriate.
 To undertake appropriate levels of pastoral care for students ensuring interpersonal skills are adequately
developed.
 To supervise the work of students in areas such as personal projects, fieldwork and industry placements.
 To communicate effectively with colleagues and students through internal networks, and the sharing of ideas
and information.

 Skilled in Communication Design, web-based

 Experience of working in appropriate

communication industry, particularly focused

 Experience of teaching at HE level

 Postgraduate qualification in appropriate
