I-Civilion
MindCraft
A general quiz contest which connects to the world of civil. Be it the world famous bridges or
facts about the tallest buildings or anything that directly/indirectly relates to the structures
around us. It is strictly a non-tech quiz.
Sample question: What connects the following 4 people?
Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln
Answer: Mount Rushmore
2 rounds - Elims + Finals
Maximum of 2 participants per team (Lone Wolves are also welcome)
I-Casted
Problem statement:
1) Three concrete cubes of dimensions 150 mm*150 mm*150 mm have to be casted. The
maximum permissible error is + 5mm.
2) Each team should consist of less than 5 members
3) There is no limit on the time for curing. The participants have to ensure the maximum
strength possible and select time accordingly.
4) The participants are free to use any grade of cement/fly ash and admixtures (optional) to
cast the cube.
5) The cube must not contain any other coarse aggregate particle. Any type of reinforcement is
not allowed.
6) Teams participating in the event should submit a duly signed report by a professor, who is a
registered faculty member of any engineering college recognized by Government of India.
7) Report will be judged by ISTE Team. The report must include 1. Technical mix design report which includes material specifications, casting and
curing procedure and cost analysis.
2. Discussion of choosing the specific mix design regarding strength and durability
aspects
3. Impact of Recyclable and eco-friendly materials used in the mix design (If any). The
density in any case should not exceed 1800 Kg/m3.
MARKING SCHEME:
Scoring will be based on three factors namely:
1)Report
2)Strength
3)Density
Formula to be used: A+B-C/100.
where
A= Marks of report
B=Average of compressive strength of three cubes will be taken.
C=Average density of three cubes(kg/m3).
Maximum of 4 participants per team.
Tame The Frame
Bring from home :
Participants have to prepare the structure and bring it to the competition.
As it is to be prepared at home, certificates will be awarded to all entries.
Bridge specifications
Construct a deck arch bridge (road/ pavement above the truss) of length 700 mm using
standard popsicle sticks and adhesives.
The bridge must have only two footings and the distance between their centers must be 500
mm.
Overlap criteria -The structure must be a truss (not a beam), not more than two Popsicle sticks
should be overlapped to make a truss member.
Joint criteria -Joints should resemble a pin connection, so not more 15 mm of popsicle stick
should be overlapped at joints.
Footing width can be up to a maximum of 60 mm and any number of popsicle sticks can be
overlapped vertically (overlap criteria exempted) over a thickness of 15 mm from the base of
the footing.
The roadway should be continuous and should allow a 10 cm x 10 cm vehicle to pass the entire
length of the bridge.
The width of the bridge at any point shall not be more than 125 mm.
Total height of the bridge from footing must not be less than 200 mm and must not exceed 300
mm. No truss members must be placed 50 mm above the roadway.
Loading will be done at the center of the bridge, so make sure that an area of 25 mm x 25 mm
at the center is free from any truss members and drill a hole of 10 mm size at the center.
Materials
The bridge must be constructed only from Popsicle sticks (120 mm x 12 mm x 2 mm) and
adhesives (Synthetic white adhesive or single component cyanoacrylate adhesive).
No other materials may be used. The bridge may not be stained, painted or coated in any
fashion with any foreign substance.
The Popsicle sticks may be cut or trimmed to any shape or size.
The adhesive can only be used to join Popsicle sticks together; however adhesives cannot be
applied on the free surface of the member sticks to increase its strength.
Quake Build
1)Design an earthquake resistant building using popstick of minimum height 80 cm the base of
which should be strictly 40 cm x 40 cm, floor area being strictly 30 cm x 30 cm and the total
number of floors must be 4 the height of each being 20 cm.
2)The length of each popstick must be minimum 8 cm and the maximum thickness should be 2
mm.
3) It is not allowed to stick multiple sticks in parallel.
4)Thickness of floor board must not be more than 5mm.
5) On the base, there must be 4 holes at each of the 4 corners of 35 cm x 35 cm square for
screwing the base to the shake table.
