Steven Martorana Basketball Skills Assessment Problem 1.) Identify the purpose of the rubric Determining which level an incoming high school freshman has the skill set to compete in. (Freshman, Junior Varsity, Varsity) Refining the Problem 2.) Provide a description of the athlete population which the rating scale is designed This assessment is meant to rate an incoming freshman’s skill set to determine whether or not he will make the team. Also, it’s used to determine which level he will compete in (Freshman, Junior Varsity, Varsity). 3.) Identify how to use this rubric During try-outs, the coach will be using this rubric to rate each player’s skills separately. Getting an above average will grant you consideration for varsity, average will grant you consideration for junior varsity and below average will grant you consideration for the freshman team. 4.) Identify the skills selected to evaluate and why they are emphasized The five skills that are emphasized in order to be a complete basketball player are: dribbling, shooting, passing, lay-ups and leadership. These skills are the basics of basketball and need to put on an exceptional display of their skills in order to be considered for a spot on the varsity team. Instrumentation and Methodology 5.) Your scale should differentiate between levels of acceptable performance For each of the five categories, the athlete can score a 1-4, with four being the best. The highest point total one can get on this assessment is 20. Leadership is by far the Steven Martorana most difficult skill to coach because people are either born leaders or not. Therefore, leadership is the quality most prized in this assessment because the other skills can be improved with much greater ease. 6.) What would the test administrator need to know about using this instrument and the procedures followed to administer the test The test administrator should have a general knowledge of basketball and the skills being evaluated in this assessment. Also, the administrator should be able to recognize player’s exceptional qualities, as well as their flaws and give comments on how to improve that specific skill. Administrator needs to have access to a basketball court, basketballs, and many cones for drills. Analysis of Results 7.) Describe how you would use the results of the rating scale As stated above, 20 points is the maximum score an athlete can score. If the athlete scores in the range of 17-20 he is considered above average and has earned consideration to the varsity team. If the athlete scores in the range of 13-16 he is considered average and has earned consideration to the junior varsity team. If the athlete scores in the range of 9-12 he is considered below average and has earned consideration to the freshman team. Anyone that scores an 8 or below than they did not make the team and will have to come out next year.
