The Performing Arts Awards recognize student achievement in the performing arts at NC State University. With grant funding provided by the NC State Foundation, Inc., four students were selected to receive the 2011‐12 Performing Artist and Creative Artist Awards: 2011-12 Performing Artist Awards Dance: Hayley Dirscherl Music: Daniel Kim Theatre: Robert Steinberg 2011-12 Creative Artist Award Theatre: Michael Seebold The Performing Artist Award honors student performers in music, dance and theatre. This award is open to any current full‐time NC State student enrolled in an ARTS NC STATE music, dance or theatre course and/or involved in an ARTS NC STATE Music Department, Dance Program, or University Theatre production or performance. The Performing Artist Award is chosen by adjudicating faculty. The winning performing artists each receive a $500 award and acknowledgement in the following year’s ARTS NC STATE Season Playbills. Dance: Hayley Dirscherl Hayley Dirscherl is a graduate student in Biomedical Engineering from Clearwater, Fl. Robin Harris, director of the NC State Dance Program, described Hayley Dirscherl, as “a very disciplined dancer who consistently dances with physical clarity, accurate musicality, and with interesting, complex, and nuanced intent. She is a smart, thoughtful, and selfless dancer. Hayley is a strong technician, but her technique is only the foundation for her sophisticated work as a performer. She attends to the details of the work on every level and in every piece she performs.” In 2011-12, Hayley performed in numerous works, including fellow student Ashley Wall’s That One Should Always and Three Nurses, and in Robin Harris’ How To section titled Swimming Skills Thru Dry Land Drills; An Outspoken Dinner Party; and Resort (Or How I Should Love to Marry). Music: Daniel Kim Daniel Kim is majoring in Nuclear Engineering and Biological Engineering and is from Gwang-Ju, South Korea. Dr. Thomas Koch, associate director of the Music Department, said, “Daniel, a piano student of NC State’s Dr. Olga Kleiankina, performed Debussy’s Reflets dans l’eau (“Reflections in the Water”) and Chopin’s “Revolutionary” Étude Op. 10, No. 12. Daniel demonstrated remarkable musicality and technical execution. His performance not only was well prepared, but exuded confidence and a masterful understanding of style.” Theatre: Robert Steinberg Robert Steinberg is a marketing major from Mooresville, NC. “Rob spent his senior year proving to University Theatre audiences that he is truly a man of many talents,” said John McIlwee, director of University Theatre. “Rob began with a stellar performance as the cynical reporter in The Philadelphia Story and seemed a perfect fit for this energetic comic role. Then he turned right around several weeks later and turned in a dramatic essay as the conflicted young doctor in Tennessee Williams’ Suddenly, Last Summer. To display even greater versatility, Rob next played one of the leads in University Theatre’s production of RENT. In this musical Rob was simply at his best; acting, singing, and playing the guitar. It was a controlled, emotional performance that went straight to the hearts of the audiences and became the ‘glue’ that held the play together.” The Creative Artist Award recognizes original work in music, dance and theatre created by full‐time NC State students. Applicants are not required to be enrolled or participate in ARTS NC STATE programs. A committee of music, dance and theatre faculty reviews submissions made annually of original work in the fields of music, dance and theatre, and chooses the artists who best exemplify the award(s) for Creative Artist. The winning creative artists each receive $500 with acknowledgement in the following year’s ARTS NC STATE playbill. A corresponding $1,000 grant will be given to the appropriate ARTS NC STATE program or department to assist in producing the selected work in performances by the Music Department, Dance Program and/or University Theatre in 2012‐2013. Theatre: Michael Seebold Michael Seebold is majoring in English (World Literature) and Philosophy and is from Cary, NC. John McIlwee, director of University Theatre, said, “Michael’s work, The Spyglass Seven, is a one-act play of intriguing simplicity and strong melodrama that features the ghost of famed poet and author Edgar Allan Poe returning from the grave at the behest of his muse, Beauty. Wishing to spare him loneliness in death, Poe is given the task of finding his true ‘soul mate’ from the ghosts of seven important women in his life. Michael has created a world of romance and mystery that explores the magnificent words of Poe applied to the situations and emotions of the women he knew and often loved. He has given us a view of Poe that allows the audience to span the arc of his literary genius throughout his life and he has done it with an entertaining conceit that has made his play this year’s Creative Artist Award winner in Theatre.” ABOUT ARTS NC STATE ARTS NC STATE is an umbrella organization comprised of the six visual and performing arts programs of North Carolina State University: Center Stage, The Crafts Center, Dance Program, Gregg Museum of Art & Design, Music Department and University Theatre.
