IV.
Course Rationale:
Child Development Care and Guidance 1 is a one semester course taught
in the Family and Consumer Sciences department intended to improve the quality of life
fo our children. This course is designed to introduce the student to information
reguarding parenting, the study of genetics and the human reproductive systems, beoming
a parent and the development of the newborn child through their physical, mental, and
social growth. The course will also discuss the importance of abstinence and the
consequences of choosing to engage in sexual activity. The course will equip studnets
with the knowldedge to develop healthy relationships and to avoid sexual behaviors that
put them at risk for HIV, STI’s and unintended pregnacy. Students will be given
information about STI’s and Birth Control to allow them to make well informed
decisions.

Course Description:
Child Development Care and Guidance 1 is a course designed to introduce the
student to the child through the study of genetics, responsibilities of parenting, becoming
a parent and the development of newborn child through their physical, mental, and social
growth. Discipline techniques and identifying child abuse will be addresses in in this
course. Student will aslo revistit STI and HIV facts as well as learn about preventing
pregnancy with appropriate methods of birth control.

Course Objectives:
1. Analyze the roles and responsibilities of parents and care givers in relation to the
family.
2. Analyze the family unit and alternatives to the traditional family.
3. Distinguish the various discipline techniques while identifing child abuse
symptoms, thus creating a safe living environment.
4. Identify the environment and heredity factor responsible for possible problems
during pregnancy and health concerns for the baby.
5. Identify the proper prenatal and postnatal care needed for mother and baby.
6. Identify the developmental characteristics of children, phyical, social, emotional,
intellectual, newborn through toddler.
7. Analyze the impact of technology on individual and family lifestyles as realted to
child development, care and guidance.
8. Recognize signs and symtoms of common sexually transmitted diseases.
9. Discuss the advantages of abstinence over other methods in preventing sexually
transmitted diseases.
10. Analyze the impact of diseases on self and society.
11. Evaluate methods of preventing pregnancy.
VII. Grading: All assignments, tests, quizzes and projects are graded by points. Due
to new District Policy- There will be a weight of 30% for “practice work” and 70% to
“Assessments”. ACADEMIC ASSISANCE WILL BE SCHEDULED PER STUDENT.

Note: homework assignements are expected to be turned in when due. Students
will have the number of days absent to make-up work missed.

Late work – follow district policy. (Due before end of 6 weeks grading period)

A zero will be given for any and all cheating and or plagiarism that are found in
any form.

Grades will be updated in power school as soon as possible and no later than 2
weeks.

Assessment policy- Anything below a 69%, will have the option of having the
concept reassessed.


Be prepared and on time to class each day!

Show respect to teacher, students, and others in the classroom!

Students will show respect to teachers space and desk. Students are NOT allowed
to sit at teachers desk or remove items without prior approval.


Cell Phone PolicyNO CELL PHONE USE PERMITTED IN CLASS WITHOUT ASKING
THE TEACHER IN ADVANCE, USUAGE WILL RESULT IN
CONFISCATION! Confiscation will result in a referral to the office.
o There will be a sign posted in the front of the room to also indicate if it
is an appropriate time to use a cell phone.
o Cell phones will not be out while student has an assessment in vacinity
of the individual. If student has a cell phone out with an assessment
student may receive a zero on the assessment and a discipline referral
VIII.- Mandatory Assignments1. Empathy Belly- Students must be willing to wear the empathy belly for 1 day
during the semester. Students will have a calendar to sign-up and must
complete in the allotted time to receive full credit. (Practice work)
2. Baby Think It Over Project- Students must be willing to take home and care
for the baby during the required time. within the time frame given. Students
will have a calendar to sign-up and must complete in the allotted time to
receive full credit. (Assessment)
