Choosing a Health Care Provider for your Newborn

Choosing the right pediatrician for your child is an important decision. It is suggested that you choose a provider prior to delivering your baby. From the moment that your baby is born, he or she will be seen by a pediatrician at the hospital in which you deliver. It is typically recommended by most providers that you schedule your baby for his or her first well baby checkup within the first couple of days of being discharged from the hospital. Here are some questions to ask the provider that you are considering:

 What insurance is accepted and innetwork?

 If you share a practice, will I always see you?

 Do you have evening and/or

Saturday hours?

 Do you have a triage staff to handle sick calls?

 Do you have a separate waiting room for sick visits?

Well Baby/Child Visits

Well Baby (or Well Child) visits are designed to promote good health and development as well as assist in the early detection and prevention of illness. Well

Baby/Child visits are very important and recommended at ages: 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months,

12 months, 15 months, 18 month and yearly from age 2 up.

Placing your Newborn on Your

Medical Insurance Coverage

Private Insurance: Your newborn is automatically covered by Oklahoma State

Law for the first 30 days of life under the mother’s private medical insurance plan.

Within 30 days: In order to continue coverage after these

30 days, you MUST submit status change paperwork to the insurance plan that will cover the infant. Please call the

Human Resources Coordinator for your place of employment to assist with this process.

Soonercare participants:

Infants need to be enrolled by hospital staff after the delivery.

Knowing your Health Care

Authority PIN and Password when you enter the hospital will assist in this process.

PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO

ADD THE INFANT YOURSELF

AS IT CAN LEAD TO THE BIRTH

NOT BEING FULLY COVERED.

If your child will not have insurance coverage or you are unsure of coverage

(such as grandparent’s plan or no dependent coverage) please tell your nurse when you admit to the hospital so that a case manager or financial services can assist

you.

Most pediatricians will see the newborn without proof of insurance but it is important to get the paperwork turned in to the insurance company in a timely manner.
