DAPCEP Offers FREE 4-year Program for Detroit Area Students!
DETROIT, MI – The Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) has
been awarded grants by The John L. & James A. Knight Foundation and The
Skillman Foundation to implement an All Male Program for current 9th Grade
Students.
The Renewable Energy Advancement for Detroit Youth (READY) Project
addresses the inequality of exposure and career opportunities in the Renewable
Energy and Energy Efficiency (RE&EE) Industries. The READY program is a fouryear initiative designed to attract and motivate young men from historically
underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue the education necessary for careers
associated with the RE&EE industries. The program will service 120 young men
by the spring of 2012. Currently the program is servicing 60 young men and we
are accepting applications for another 60 young men in the 9th Grade during the
2011-2012 School Year.
The major content areas of READY include: project-based engineering and
science courses coupled with leadership, mentoring and “soft skills”
workshops/sessions. Students will participate in Saturday out-of-school time
experiences that occur twice per year during spring and fall programming
sessions. Students will experience programming on a university campus during
the summer. Saturday courses will rotate throughout the campuses of DAPCEP
partner universities located in the Detroit Metropolitan Area. These courses will
provide students with exposure to the most recent technological advances, the
environment and activities of university campuses.
Based on the recommendations of our university partners, DAPCEP will support
the participation of READY students in a university facilitated summer bridge
program designed to ease the transition from high school to college.
