Irish Sheepherders, O’Doherty and O’ Sullivan were close friends and neighbors. Each raised pure [true]
breeding sheep. Fences and grazing ranges were meticulously maintained. Characteristics of the breed
include Black vs white wool. Long vs short stranded wool and Narrow vs wide muzzles.Muzzle widthe
determined if sheep grazed mainly in the fields or could roam craggy hillsides.
Both shepherds were bachelors. Both suddenly died mysteriously on the same day.
By the time that other villagers noticed, both herds had co-mingled.
In the following Spring there were several new lambs the F1 generation of the co-mingle and it appeared
that they all belonged to O”Doherty.
However, 3 years later, the not so true breeding O’Doherty lambs began birthing the F2 generation, and it
was obvious to all of the descendant shepherds that a tri-hybrid cross had taken place among the F1
sheep.
