CHEMISTRY 12 – Solubility Qualitative Analysis Activity You will be given an unknown solid in groups of 2 (you may work alone if you wish). Your task is to determine which solid you have been given using the ‘Solubility of Common Compounds’ table in your data book, and what you have learned about solubility and solubility charts. Possible Unknowns Sr(NO3)2 KI Na2CO3 FeCl3 CuSO4 ZnCl2 ZnSO4 BaCl2 Available Aqueous Solutions NaCl AgNO3 Pb(NO3)2 NaOH ZnCl2 K2CO3 Na2SO4 KI KNO3 Procedure 1. Put on goggles. 2. Take your unknown and dissolve in 50 ml water in a 100 ml beaker. Label the unknown solution with the number given on the original container. The rest is up to you. Develop a written, step by step procedure to test the unknown to determine the contents. Disposal All chemicals can be disposed of down the sink with plenty of water. You will be required to hand in electronically details of the procedure you developed (sample format on the last page), the observations of each step performed, and the identity of the unknown (and the reasoning that led you to the identity) CHEM 12 Qualitative Analysis Marking (/4) 0 Repeat (no mark given) 1 Not meeting expectation 2 Minimally meeting expectations 3 Meeting expectations 4 Exceeding expectations -serious safety issue, repeat required -procedure not provided -unknown identified incorrectly -errors in performing solubility tests -sol. tests incorrectly interpreted -reasoning not provided -no observations provided -incomplete procedure -unknown identified correctly -errors in interpreting sol. tests OR reasoning not provided -minimal observations provided -complete procedure -unknown identified correctly -sol. Tests performed correctly and reasoning provided -clear observations provided -complete procedure -unknown identified correctly -sol. Tests performed correctly and reasoning provided -unknown identified in 3 tests or less -clearly stated observations Sample: Date Group Members Chemistry 12 Q.A. Activity Purpose: (What are you trying to do?) Unknown number: (provide here) Procedure: (develop a step by step procedure of what solution you will add first, then the next etc) Observations: (provide results of solubility chart) Identity of Unknown: (Unknown #___ was determined to be __________) Reasoning: (State specifically how you know the identity of the unknown, using the results from each test to explain) Error: (State any mistakes you specifically know that happened – mixing up chemicals, spills etc that could affect the results)
