8. Justification for proposal:
In order to strengthen the unique nature of each theatre emphasis we are specifying the in
depth nature of the performance and design/technology emphases and the hybrid, broader
Effective Fall 2013
based view of the theatre studies emphasis. 1: Students may only complete one emphasis.
2: All theatre studies emphasis students must take an equal distribution of classes from the
performance and design/tech emphases. 3. We are dividing the one topics course (TH440)
into three (TH440, TH450, TH460) with each course being specific to the emphasis.
Students choosing the performance and design/tech emphases typically have very specific
career goals in that area (e.g., actor, lighting designer, costume draper). Theatre Studies is the
choice for students who want a broader theatre education, or who need a blend of the two
emphases to support their career goals in areas such as teaching, stage management,
directing, or those wishing to go on in history/theory and criticism. These changes will
strengthen the theatre curriculum and are in alignment with and support the approved
program and emphases learning outcomes.
Due to significant demand, TH423, Computer Aided Drafting for Scenery and Lighting, has
been reactivated and we are adding it back in as a design and technology emphasis option.
