Kimberley Through A New Lens Photography With Bruce Kirkby and Selkirk Outdoor Careers 11/12 Class On February 9th Bruce Kirkby and the Selkirk Outdoor Careers class ventured into the world of photography with captivating slideshows, stories, and full emersion into photography lingo and techniques. This time pushed the students to try new things with their cameras, perspectives, and storytelling abilities through photos. Bruce led us through five half day session either learning new techniques with cameras in hand or looking at our photos to try and help inspire and support the budding photographers. From those five sessions and several Outdoor Trips, including students own adventures over the March Break, each student selected one photo to be produced for the gallery. It was hard to choose just one, but we believe we’ve chosen a good variety that depicts stories of the People of Kimberley. Bruce often helped engrain the flexibility of photography, and that you really just need to get out there and shoot! Below are students comments and Thank you to Bruce for the fantastic experience and inspiration for a new generation of photographers. “I had a lot of fun in the photo course. Before the course I already enjoyed taking pictures but now I know how to do it better, I learned a lot.” Malte “Thank you very much. I learned a lot throughout the course and it inspired me to go out and shoot more!” Luke “ Hi Bruce, I really enjoyed the classes with you because I learned so many new things (I like the silhouette shot). Another thing I liked was that you showed us some pictures.” “I really enjoyed the lessons and learned a lot about taking pictures and “playing” with my camera more and more. Thank you!” Marie “I am so happy that you came into our class and showed us a bit of photography. I really enjoyed the classes! It was very good of you to take the time to look at our photos as we sent them in. I will keep taking photos in the future! Thank you so much!” Antonia “At Selkirk I always wished/tried to get a photography course. Finding out we would get an opportunity to work with you in our outdoors class was super exciting because I’m very fond of your work! I wish the program could have been longer but I understand the photography part isn’t actually the class. I have always loved photography, but now I have more insight on what you do, and I’ve definitely learned a ton! Hopefully it will help me in my future goals! Thanks a ton!!! Bruce!” Kristen “I liked the whole course!” Till “Hey Bruce, I really, really enjoyed the class with you. Photography is just a great thing and I like learning some basic stuff. One thing that makes me frustrated is that my camera is so bad, I couldn’t really do everything I wanted to. But soon I’m gonna buy a better camera and then I’m going to remember everthing you taught us!!! Thanks a lot! See you soon!” Rike “Bruce, I think you did a really good job teaching us about photography. Your hose and bucket metaphor was really helpful. Thanks for all the tips, and letting me use your camera! Thank you” Dalton “Hey Bruce, I really enjoyed taking photos with a purpose of thrying to get a specific shot, and I learned lots about how to change certain settings on my camera. I wish that I had not missed the first few classes. Thanks again!” Patti Thank you Bruce, Your work is inspiring, your energy infectious, and your heart on your sleeve! I don’t know what more I can say other than Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy life to work with the Youth of Kimberley. You’ve left a strong and positive impression on them. It was amazing to see them work through the challenges of taking a good shot. The students also sincerely enjoyed following you on your worldly journeys through your photos, articles, books and magazine pieces. It added life to art, and inspiration to tell more intentional stories through images! Much Appreciated! Sincerely Jenn Meens
