As such, neither overall grades nor assignment grades will be discussed in the class or in front of other students. If you have a question about your grade(s), you need to plan to visit me during office hours or send an email with your question. Computer Requirements Students will need access to a computer with Microsoft Office 2013. Due to changes in options and features, using an older version of MS Office will result in portions of your assignments not being correct. If you do not have your own computer, you are welcome to use the computers on campus. Class time is provided to work on Computer Literacy assignments. Classroom/Computer Lab Policies The primary purpose of the computer labs on campus is to support the educational process. Priority use of computer labs will be given to students for the completion of assignments, exercises, and projects for academic courses. Food and drinks are prohibited in the computer labs. For detailed information regarding computer usage, e-mail, and network policies, please refer to the Student Handbook http://www.osuit.edu/campus_community/cis/computer_usage.php. Computer Labs: Computers are available in the campus library, LASSO Center (NCAT Rooms 308 and 309), Noble Center rooms 101, 102, 104, 106, 107, 204, 303, 304, & 305 for general student use when classes aren’t being conducted. Use these campus computers if you need more time than allotted in class or need to catch up on assignments due to missed class time. All computers on campus are set to delete files saved in My Documents or on the Desktop when the computer is turned off; therefore, it is important you always save your work to your USB drive. You cannot share a USB drive with a classmate because it will not allow you to have two files with the same name on the drive. It replaces the original file with the new version. Each student must have his/her own USB drive! Instructions for Specific Tasks and Assignments Each student is expected to complete his/her own assignments. Sharing of assignments will result in zero credit for all students involved. It is imperative you read and follow ALL of the instructions provided within each assignment to earn good scores. Do not skip any steps! Section Activities: You will complete the Section Activities in each section of the textbook. The Section Activities from the Office 2013 textbook should be saved to the student’s USB drive and submitted to the appropriately labeled Dropbox found in D2L by the date indicated on the assignment schedule below as a backup to the printouts submitted in class for each section. Prior to submitting your assignment for grading, you should compare your final version to the model answer at the beginning of the section in your textbook. Assignments uploaded to the incorrect submission area may be overlooked and, therefore, not graded. If you upload the wrong file, you can simply upload the correct file and it will replace the original document. The last document uploaded is the one graded. Once you complete an assignment, I recommend you upload it to D2L even if you are submitting it early. D2L will also send you a confirmation email that the file was successfully uploaded. Do not delete these emails! You may need them later. This process may take a couple of minutes—make sure you have enough time before the due date and time, so you do not get locked out while the computer is processing. Keep all saved assignments until the end of the semester and your final grade is posted. The Assignment Schedule contains all assignments and due dates. Grades will be posted in D2L as assignments are graded. These grades will be based on completeness, quality, accuracy in following instructions, and timely submission—late submissions will not be accepted, resulting in a zero on the assignment. Concept Quizzes: The Concept Quizzes are in the quiz section of D2L. You will have a Concept Quiz at the end of each section. The Concept Quizzes are multiple choice questions over the section you just completed. You may use your textbook to look up answers. Some of the answers will be found in the steps of the activities you just completed and others will be found in the paragraphs before and after the activity steps, so make sure you read through all of the text. You should plan to have at least a 30-minute block of time to work through one of these once you start it. Skills Reviews, Assessments, and Challenges: The Skills Reviews, Assessments, and Challenges are located at the end of each section in the textbook. You are reviewing the skills you learned in the section, so all of the tasks should be familiar. If something seems unfamiliar, you should be able to go back through the section activities and find what you need to do. If you are unable to find it, ask for help. Printouts will be submitted in class, and you will upload your finished projects to the appropriately labeled Dropbox in D2L prior to the due date. Unit Exams: This course has three exams. You will complete an exam at the end of each application unit: MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. These Unit Exams are open book and open note. Your submitted exams should represent your individual efforts only. The unit exams are used as the assessment tool for computer literacy. All Unit Exams must be taken in class. No make-up exams will be administered. Participation: Regular attendance is expected in this class as it will be in the workplace. Updated: February 9, 2016 Page 5 of 10 Late Work Late work is not accepted, as ample time will be provided and assignments are made available well before the due dates. Due dates mean due in Desire2Learn (D2L) on or before the date and time listed on the assignment schedule. The assignment schedule included in this syllabus will help you plan ahead, so you can get your work done on time. If you choose to work ahead of the schedule, that is great. However, you cannot work slower than the schedule and be successful in this class. Please do not wait until the due date to try to rush through one or more assignments, projects, quizzes, or exams. The due date is not the day you should first attempt an assignment or a week’s worth of assignments; it is the last possible time you will be allowed to submit your assignment(s). It is up to you to plan your time so all assignments will be submitted on time. Student Conduct Students are expected to cooperate in maintaining a classroom environment conducive to learning. Courteous and respectful behavior is expected from all students each day. All cell phones must be turned off. Your cell phone should be put away out of sight. Sending and receiving calls/messages distracts you from your assignments as well as being distracting to others in the classroom; therefore, you are expected to put your phone away during class time. OSU-IT is a tobacco free campus—this includes e-cigarettes. Specific behaviors which will not be tolerated in the classroom include: Profanity Tobacco usage Abuse to classroom furniture Abuse to classroom equipment Slamming of books Yelling at other students or instructor Use of any of these behaviors or other behaviors either prohibited by OSU-IT or disruptive to the learning environment will result in the student being asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class for the day. Further use of these behaviors will result in the student conduct office being notified. Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty or misconduct is neither condoned nor tolerated at OSUIT. Any student found guilty of academic dishonesty or misconduct shall be subject to disciplinary action. Academic dishonesty and/or misconduct includes, but is not limited to, the following actions: (1) Plagiarism: the representation of previously written, published, or creative work as one’s own; (2) Unauthorized collaboration on projects; (3) Cheating on examinations; (4) Unauthorized advance access to exams; (5) Fraudulent alteration of academic materials; (6) Knowing cooperation with another person in an academically dishonest undertaking. Students are required to actively protect their work against misuse by others. Having someone else complete assignments for you equates to cheating. You are expected to do your own work on all of your assignments in this class. While you can talk with other students about assignments, you must create, modify, save, and upload your own assignments. It is fine to discuss approach, where a tool is found, formulas, etc. with others, but all keying of your assignments must be done by you! Do not copy part or all of anyone else’s documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and/or quiz answers. Do not allow another student to copy your work and/or answers. Any plagiarized work will receive a zero for the assignment for all parties involved. Advanced Standing Test Opportunity *There is an advanced standing test available in the Assessment Center, located in the Grady Clack Center. This exam covers Windows 7, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and must be completed by the end of the first week of school (Tuesday, September 8). You must pass all three with a 75% or higher in order to receive credit for class. Updated: February 9, 2016 Page 7 of 10 Attendance Policy For Face-to-Face Courses A primary component of OSUIT's Mission is “to prepare and sustain a diverse student body as competitive members of a world-class workforce.” Regular and consistent attendance not only aids in academic success, dependable attendance is a requirement in today's real-world employment; therefore, regular and consistent attendance is a requirement in all OSUIT courses. Definitions: Absent: Failing to attend all or a significant portion of a class or lab session. A. Students may not be marked as absent if missing class for situations such as, but not limited to 1. participating in a required university activity such as a field trip; 2. fulfilling a military obligation; 3. a mandatory court appearance; 4. death in the immediate family; 5. extreme illness or accident to oneself or immediate family. Instructors, at their discretion, may require proof of such events. B. It is the responsibility of the student to contact and inform the instructor and/or department in advance of such excused absences whenever possible. Tardy: Arriving late to class as defined by the individual class instructor. Faculty, at their discretion, may equate three tardies to equal one absence. Procedures: Early Intervention A. Any student who misses 10% of an individual course (or earlier at faculty discretion) during a regular fifteen-week semester, or the equivalent portion of time in a shorter session, will have their name submitted by that course instructor to the OSUIT Early Alert System for retention intervention. B. At the point the Early Alert is issued, the student must meet with their assigned faculty advisor or designated faculty/staff member within seven (7) academic calendar days for counseling on how to improve their attendance and academic success. Excessive Absences A. The University reserves the right to administratively withdraw any student from an individual course who misses 20% of that course, whether excused or unexcused, and, in the opinion of the instructor, the student does not have a reasonable opportunity to be successful in the course. B.
