STAT NOTES
SEEDINGS
Number-one seeds won all 14 individual State Championships. Ten number-one
seeds (Regional Champions) failed to place. All-State Honors were claimed by
the following seeded wrestlers: 46 number-one seeds; 35 number-two seeds; 25
number-three seeds; and 6 number-four seeds.
THE TEAM TITLE
At the start of the 43rd, and final, AAA State Wrestling tournament, most fans
expected three teams to contend for the championship: Colonial Forge,
Robinson and Westfield. As is often the case, the team title was settled in the
consolation rounds, as the Robinson Rams outperformed their two main
competitors. Coach Bryan Hazard brought 9 Robinson wrestlers to the
tournament, and all 9 placed, whereas Coach Chuck Hoskins of Westfield, in
second place, and Coach Bill Swink of Colonial Forge each brought 10
wrestlers and each had 7 placers. Forest Park also joined the mix and tied
Colonial Forge for third place. Forest Park Coach Seth Cameron had his first
individual State Champ – in fact, three of them. All four teams will be back to
battle in the new 6A Division next season, although Robinson, with 7 returning
place winners, will obviously be considered the front runner.
STAT FACTS

It was Robinson’s 5th team title, which places them in 4th place for team
championships. Only 14 schools have been crowned team champions in
the last 65 years, 1949 to present - which includes the “Open Period” from
1949 to 1970, and the “AAA Period” from 1971 to present.

During the 43 years of the “AAA Period”, the Eastern Region has
dominated the State Tournament with 322 individual State Champions, to
137 for the Northern Region, 67 for the Northwestern Region and 44 for
the Central Region.

Average season record of the 2013 AAA State Champions: 46-3

Westfield may have set some kind of record this season, with four Aiello
brothers in their lineup: brothers Jonathan (Fr/152), David (Jr/120),
Stephen (Sr/160) and Frank (Sr/170). The three oldest Aiello sons
qualified for the State Tournament, and two of them placed: twins
Stephen-2nd, and Frank-5th. I am aware of numerous pairs of brothers
competing at States, but this is the first time I have heard of three.
THE CHAMPIONS
106 – Tommy Aloi, Forest Park, Senior, won the 1st individual state title for
Coach Seth Cameron (himself a State Champ for Stonewall Jackson, 140/1998)
and his school’s 2nd Champion. A State runner-up last season, Tommy was also
a 2011 Cadet Freestyle and Greco All American, and placed at both the Beast of
East and Powerade tournaments. He comes from a wrestling background as his
father, Tom Sr., also wrestled in high school. Tommy plans to wrestle in college
and is considering several schools.
113 – JD Gregory, Hanover, Sophomore, claimed the 4th title for his school and
Coach Aaron Bradley (who was 2X State Champ for Lee-Davis, 130/1995,
135/1996). JD (Jeffrey) is a 2X Central Region Champ, placed 5th at States last
season and is also an All-Academic student, maintaining a GPA north of 3.0.
120 – Cam Timok, Hermitage, Junior, became his school’s 5th State Champ and
Coach Dalton Head’s first. Coach Head was a State Champ for Ocean Lakes
(125/2000). Cam comes from a rich family wrestling background. His father
Mark was Hermitage’s first State Champion (126/1980), an uncle was a region
champ, and both of his brothers and several cousins have all wrestled. Cam has
been wrestling since the 6th grade, with the Panther Mat Club and Team
Predator.
126 – Bill Adusei, Mount Vernon, Freshman, won the 4th State Championship
for his school and Coach Anthony McDuffie’s first at the school. Coach
McDuffie also had a State Champ while coaching at Woodbridge (Ivan Lagares,
2004/171). Bill was the MVP on offense and defense on the Mount Vernon
freshman football team. He also participates in his church’s activities.
132 – Dennis Gustafson, Senior, Forest Park, the 2nd State Champ for Coach
Seth Cameron. A 2010 State Champ in North Carolina, Dennis finished 3 rd at
Virginia States in 2011 and 2012. He is currently ranked 9th in the country by
INTERMAT and 11th by Amateur Wrestling News. He had an outstanding senior
season, claiming the championship at Escape The Rock, and finishing 3rd at both
the Beast of the East and Powerade tournaments. Dennis is a 3X NHSCA
finalist and has signed to wrestle for Coach Kevin Dresser at rising national
power Virginia Tech in the fall.
138 – Neal Richards, Sophomore, Matoaca, won his second AAA State
Championship and claimed the 3rd AAA Championship for Coach Michael
Moore. Neal has an impressive resume, finishing 1st at the NHSCA Freshmen
Nationals last year and 1st at the Tulsa Nationals in 2011. He will try to become a
4X State Champ over the next two years as Matoaca moves to the 5A Division.
145 – Beau Donahue, Senior, Westfield, became a 3X State Champion, and
won the 6th individual State Championship for Coach Chuck Hoskins. He won
the Championship in dominating fashion with four major decisions. Beau is a 4X
District and 3X Regional champ. In addition to wrestling, Beau excelled on the
football field as an All District and All Region linebacker. He is undecided on a
college, but plans to study architecture and wrestle. Numerous schools have
expressed interest in Beau, including NC, NC State, UVA, GMU, Lehigh, Arizona
State, and Buffalo. Hopefully, we will see Beau at a future NCAA tournament.
152 – Taylor Misuna, Junior, Grassfield, became Coach Jesse Pearce’s 2nd
State Champion in his third year at the helm, the other being Camden Anderson
(103/2011). Taylor is Grassfield’s 4th State Champ since the school opened in
2007. He is a 3X Southeast District Champ and was the State runner-up last
season at 138. He has several colleges expressing interest in him wrestling for
them. A National Honor Society member, Taylor has a 3.7 GPA. He goes by the
nickname “Bumble Bee”. His cousin Collin Saunders of Lake Taylor is a 2X state
qualifier.
160 – Rory Renzi, Senior, Lake Braddock, is Coach Scott Matheny’s second
State Champ. The other was George Billy (112/2008). Scott also coached
another State Champ at Edison (Shawn Herring, 215/2000). Rory had a 49-1
senior season, his only loss being a 3-2 decision to a Maryland 2X State Champ
early in the season. He finally won his State Championship after finishing 5 th for
the past three years (2010/112, 2011/135, 2012/145). He claimed his state title
with a stellar performance of two pins and two major decisions. Rory comes from
a family of 7 brothers and 5 sisters. Five of the Renzi boys have wrestled for
Lake Braddock. Older brothers Ronnie and Ricky also wrestled at Arizona State,
and brother Ross is a redshirt freshman at West Virginia University. Rory would
like to join his brother at WVU, but has not yet committed.
170 – Brett Stein, Senior, Forest Park, capped off a remarkable tournament by
Forest Park as he became Coach Seth Cameron’s 3rd State Champion. Brett
finished 3rd in the state at 160 last year while attending South County High
School. At the end of his junior year he was an All American at the NHSCA
Junior Nationals. He had an excellent senior season, finishing 1st at Escape the
Rock, 6th at Beast of the East, and 5th at Powerade – all tough out of state
tournaments. Brett was a 4X District and 2X Regional champ. He is a member
of the National Honor Society with a 3.8 GPA. Brett has signed to wrestle at
Division I Gardner-Webb University, where he plans to study Exercise Science.
182 – Ryland O’Brien, Senior, First Colonial, became Coach Willie Stravino’s
first State Champion and the schools 8th AAA State Champ. Ryland was state
runner up last year at 170. He is also an accomplished runner, have timed 4:27
in the mile, 10:04 in the two mile and 16:20 in a 5K race. Ryland’s dad and uncle
played Division I football. He is also a 2X Legal Studies Academy Student of the
Year. He has not committed yet, but hopes to attend an Ivy League university,
where he plans to study Foreign Relations and wrestle.
195 – Corbin Ramos, Senior, Matoaca, won the 4th AAA Championship for
Coach Michael Moore. One of only two AAA wrestlers to go unbeaten in the
state this season, Corbin finished at 48-0. He is a 3X state place winner, having
finished 4th in 2011 at 170 and 3rd in 2012 at 182. He was the only competitor to
record a pin in the finals, of an undefeated opponent. Corbin is also a 3X Central
District Champ and 2X Central Region Champ. He is planning to attend either
VMI or Bridgewater College and study Criminal Justice and Homeland Security.
220 – William Rupp, Senior, West Potomac, became only the second AAA State
Champion at West Potomac, and Coach Mike Cummings first. William was
also one of two Virginia AAA wrestlers, at 46-0, to go through the season
undefeated. William plans to attend either the University of Virginia or Virginia
Tech to study civil engineering.
285 – Jake Pinkston, Junior, Robinson, capped off the State Finals and a great
season for Robinson and Coach Bryan Hazard. Jake became Robinson’s 27th
State Champion, and Coach Hazard’s 11th Champion. In a very rare occurrence
in the heavyweight weight class, Jake has been a finalist for his first three years.
If he makes it to the final next season, I believe it will be the first time a
heavyweight has made the final all four years of high school in Virginia. Jake is a
3X Northern Region Champ, 2X Beast of the East place winner, and placed 3 rd at
the Walsh Ironman tournament this season. He also excels at other sports and
is a 2X First Team District and Region in football, and Second Team All-State.
He also plays varsity baseball. Jake’s dad wrestled at a junior college in Kansas.
Jake hopes to wrestle in college, but has made no commitment yet.
NEXT SEASON
As usual, seniors dominated the 2013 State Championships, 60 placed in the top
eight. Of the 52 underclassmen who placed (32 juniors, 14 sophomores and 6
freshmen), 6 were State Champions and will be back next season to try again.
Returners next season by region: Eastern and Northern, 14 each; Central 13;
and Northwestern 11. Eleven schools return two or more place winners from this
tournament next season: Robinson 7; Colonial Forge and Matoaca 3 each; and
2 each from Battlefield, Cox, Hanover, Hylton, Indian River, Kellam, Landstown,
and Mountain View.
Virginia High School Wrestling Historical Statistics
Since the 2012/2013 season marks the end of Virginia Wrestling’s A, AA,
and AAA Class system, I thought it would be appropriate to compile the State
Tournament placement statistics for historical purposes, and for the interest of
“stat nuts” like myself. I think the most logical way of doing the stats is to break it
down into two periods:
1. The Open Era (22 years), from the first tournament in 1949 to 1970, when it
was open to public and private schools.
2. The AAA Era (43 years), from 1971 to 2013. The Virginia High School
League (VHSL) established the A, AA, AAA Class system in 1971 for high school
wrestling. This compilation is limited to AAA since I only have records of the AAA
State Tournaments. I hope someone who follows A, or AA, can do the same.
Any historical discussion of public high school wrestling in Virginia must
begin with acknowledging Coach William (Billy) Martin Sr., the “Father of
Virginia High School Wrestling”, and legendary member of the National Wrestling
Hall of Fame. Coach Martin got the ball rolling in 1948 at Granby High School in
Norfolk. Coach Martin’s Granby team won 22 state titles in 23 years, and many
of his Granby wrestlers went on to become NCAA Champions and Olympic team
members. The wrestling community in America became aware of the start of
high school wrestling in Virginia with the following article by Coach Martin which
appeared in the “NCAA Guide of 1949” (in the section for state high school
tournament results). (The NCAA Guides were published each year as a preview
to the upcoming college wrestling season, and can be found at the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame website nwhof.org):
1948
By William Martin, Granby High School
Wrestling was started in Virginia Class A High Schools for the first time in
1948. Woodberry Forest, Augusta Military Academy, and The Virginia School for
the Deaf and Blind, all prep schools, have had wrestling for some years. Granby
High School and Norview High of Norfolk, and Jefferson Senior of Roanoke,
started wrestling for the first time this year and had a complete wrestling
schedule. Granby and Norview wrestled several out-of-state teams, including
Mepham High of Long Island. Granby High School was undefeated in the State
High and Prep School circles, and Granby also won the State Senior AAU
Wrestling Championship in Richmond on March 20, 1948, with seven individual
championships. High School wrestling is definitely going forward in Virginia, and
several schools have given indications that they will start wrestling next year. A
State tournament is planned for March 11 and 12, in 1949, at the University of
Virginia.
Coach Martin continued to send in the Virginia State Tournament results
to the NCAA Guides for many years. Here is his report of the first Virginia State
High School Wrestling Tournament:
1949
By William Martin, Granby High School
Interest in high school wrestling is increasing steadily in Virginia. Two new
schools entered into competition in 1949. They were Maury High School in
Norfolk, and Staunton Military Academy. Other schools in the state that have
teams are Granby High, Norfolk; Jefferson Senior, Roanoke; Norview High,
Norfolk; Woodberry Forest Prep School, Augusta Military Academy, and the
Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind.
The State High School Tournament was held at the University of Virginia
on March 4 and 5. Granby High of Norfolk won the tournament which was highly
contested the entire way.

THE OPEN ERA, 1949 TO 1970
The following table lists all State Championship medals won from 1949 through 1970. Ranking is
by (1) total medals, (2) 1st places, then (3) alphabetically. The year listed for each team is the
year that that team was first noted participating in the tournament.
(Top three places were awarded from 1949 to 1951, thereafter the top four)

Top AAA Teams 1971 to 2013
The Virginia High School League established the A, AA, AAA Class system for high
school wrestling in 1971. The following tables list all AAA State Wrestling Championship
medals won by the teams in the 43 years from 1971 to 2013. Ranking is by order: (1)
total medals; (2) 1st places; (3) alphabetically. Note that only the Top 4 place winners
were recorded for the years 1971 to 1974, 1976 and 1979; Top 6 for the years 1975,
1977, 1978, and 1980 to 2005; Top 8 placing began in 2006. The year listed with the
school is the first year that school had a place winner – not necessarily the first year the
school appeared in the tournament.

(Grateful acknowledgement is hereby given to Frank Sedgwick, of “Frank’s Ranks”
fame from the Northern Region, for giving me his collection of State brackets; and
Phil Cronin, former Chantilly wrestling coach, for providing me with many years of State
Tournament placement results that I was missing. Phil recently published a book listing
all Virginia State Wrestling tournament place winners from 1949 to 2012, which was for
sale at the state tournament, and he is working on a book about the history of wrestling
in Virginia, which will include A, AA, AAA and VISAA. Phil plans to have it ready for
publishing by November 15, 2013. You can contact Phil for ordering information at:
