WARD EAST 7 STUDENT PACK WARD PHILOSOPHY The essence of the care on East 7 reflects our belief that we aim to care for each patient as if they were the only one. Each patient has a right to expect a high quality of care that is based on research and is provided by a competent, experienced and committed multi-disciplinary team of staff. Welcome to East 7 Acute Care of the Elderley Medicine The staff on East 7 would like to welcome you to the ward. They understand how daunting and stressful it can be starting on a new ward and are here to make your placement an enjoyable and interesting experience. You will be allocated a mentor and co-mentor when you begin your placement. During your placement you will have the opportunity to observe procedures and investigations as well as visiting other areas and meeting specialist nurses associated with the ward. Please discuss your individual learning needs with your mentor, so that they may assist you in gaining a valuable and enjoyable working experience. The ward is divided into three working teams. We work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including • Medical and Nursing staff • Physiotherapists/ Occupational therapists • Pharmacists • Dieticians/speech and language therapists Our aim, where possible is to return people to their optimum level of independence and function, thus facilitating their discharge as soon as they are medically fit. MANAGEMENT Ward Manager - Patricia Page Deputy Ward Manager - Jacqueline Warrington NURSES SHIFT TIMES ARE AS FOLLOWS: Early shift 07.00 to 14.30 Late shift 13.45 to 21.15 Night shift 19.00 to 07.30 Long day 0700 to 1930 If you are unable to work due to sickness then you must phone the ward as soon as possible and speak with the nurse in charge to inform them of your sickness and when you are likely to return to work. WARD INFORMATION Please familiarise yourself with the ward layout, including the bed areas, treatment room, CSSD room, sluices, linen room and Waste room. Make yourselves aware of the waste policies and appropriate disposal of sharps and contaminated and infected waste and linen. Locate the fire alarms and emergency exits. Locate the Cardiac Arrest trolley. PRACTICAL PROCEDURES MAY INCLUDE • Washing patients • Oral Hygiene care • Facial shaving • Feeding • Assisting with menu selection • Naso-gastric feeding and tube insertion/care • P.E.G. Feeding • Assisting patients to the toilet • Incontinence care • Catheter care and catheterisation • Specimen collection • Insertion of suppositories and/or enemas • Colostomy care • Drug rounds – 1. Check Id and allergies with patient 2. Demonstrate the ability to read a drug chart safely. 3. Administer sub-cut and IM injections under supervision 4. Calculate and check drug doses 5. Observe and administer CD drugs • Oxygen administration Blood Glucose monitoring Please familiarise yourself with the equipment used for blood glucose monitoring and identify when blood glucose monitoring should be carried out. Observations The recording of the temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, 02 saturations, blood pressure etc. Pulse Oximetry Glasgow Coma Scale Sliding Scale Insulin Monitoring DISCHARGE PLANNING Discharge planning is a vital part of nursing care that is provided on East 7 and the importance of appropriate and effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team is paramount. You will have the opportunity to become involved in the discharge planning process and attend the various discharge planning meetings held at ward level. East 7 also has multidisciplinary team meetings once a week which includes members of the multidisciplinary team.
