Introduction This post is a new post for a Cardiologist with a special interest in Electrophysiology and complex Devices . The appointee will be a high volume Electrophysiologist and would be expected to develop a practise focussing on more complex procedures including ablation for Atrial Fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and ablation in adults with congenital heart disease. The post also includes sessions for implantation of pacemakers, implantable defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy devices. The post is based at Golden Jubilee National Hospital (GJNH) in Clydebank, where the appointee will work predominantly. There may also be clinical duties in the Cardiology Directorate of the Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board. The post is a joint appointment by the two Health Boards with the National Waiting Times Centre Board being the main employer. You will be accountable to the Medical Director of the GJNH who will also be the 'Responsible Officer' for the post holder. The successful candidate will join a team of Cardiologists who work jointly between the two boards. Both Boards are committed to developing a high quality service for patients requiring Interventional Electrophysiology management and work towards providing a world class reputation. The Golden Jubilee National Hospital The Golden Jubilee Hospital is a state of the art tertiary referral centre for cardiothoracic surgical and interventional cardiological services on the banks of the River Clyde in close proximity to Glasgow International Airport and within 30 minutes of the centre of Glasgow by road and rail links. Direct overnight sleeper rail service to Euston, London is available at Dalmuir station 5 minutes from the hospital. Clydebank is on the westerly outskirts of Glasgow in close proximity to the West of Scotland and Loch Lomond. The city has a vibrant cultural life, with first class galleries, museums, class sports and leisure facilities, and is only 45 miles from Edinburgh. The hospital is managed by its own Special Health Board called The National Waiting Times Centre Board is part of NHS Scotland. Built recently in the 1990’s, it is a very modern hospital with 300 beds overall and all wards having single rooms with en-suite facilities. The estate is one of a high specification and has the unusual feature of a hotel and conference centre as an integral unit alongside the hospital. It has recently also opened The Beardmore Centre of Health Science, and recently established Scottish Innovation Centre, facilities which provide educational and research capabilities. Overall, the hospital is regarded by the staff as a very pleasing and attractive working environment and desirable patient experience. The main clinical services provided are heart and lung, elective major orthopaedics, general surgery, plastic surgery and endoscopy services. 1 Catchment Population Glasgow and the immediate surroundings has a population of around 580,000. It is the largest city and the commercial capital of Scotland. The regional cardiology service extends to the entire West of Scotland and additionally receives national referrals through the National Service Divisions The West of Scotland catchment population is 2.2 million. The Territorial Health Boards for the West of Scotland are Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Lanarkshire, Forth Valley, Ayrshire and Arran, Dumfries and Galloway, all of which are part of the West of Scotland Regional Cardiac Service oversees cardiac services for the region. The West of Scotland Heart and Lung Centre The Centre was created in March 2008 at the Golden Jubilee Hospital, bringing interventional cardiology and specialist surgical heart and lung services previously provided by other hospitals in the region to the present site. GJNH is a dedicated regional unit for interventional cardiology including electrophysiology, device implantation and primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). With this array of specialist cardiopulmonary services the GJNH is one of the largest heart and lung centres in Europe. Additionally the Board hosts three National services; The Scottish National Advanced Heart Failure service (SNAHFs), The Scottish Adult Congenital Cardiac service (SACCs), The Scottish Pulmonary Vascular service (SPVUs). Activity The Interventional Cardiology service performed around 6500 cath lab and 390 device procedures in 2013/14. The Cath labs currently have 1 dedicated EP lab which provided over 450 electrophysiology procedures within this period and is likely to provide well over 500 procedures in 2014/15. The facility has both CARTO and Velocity mapping systems alongside the most up to date catheter equipment including contact force sensing catheters, intra cardiac echo and cryoablation technologies, and provide treatment for an increasingly complex range of arrhythmias from SVT through to atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, and arrhythmias in adults with complex congenital heart disease. Research, Development and Development Research is a very important component of the activity at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital and is supported by a R&D steering group and dedicated manager. The majority of the active research projects hosted by the Board in the recruitment of patients from within the Regional and National Medicine Division. Contract (commercial) research is encouraged and staff use income generated from this source to maintain research support staff such as Clinical Research Fellows and Research Nurses. Academic research is also encouraged and the new appointment will be strongly encouraged to take an active role in this activity. Professor Keith Oldroyd is the Research and Development Director Beardmore Centre for Health Science This centre contains a dedicated Clinical Research Facility which is designed to provide a ‘fit for purpose’ space for patients recruited to clinical trials. There are four consulting rooms; one is set up for echocardiography and one as an exercise tolerance suite. The remaining two rooms are general consulting rooms. The rest of the centre is made up of prep rooms, simulator training wet lab work stations and a patient waiting area. The Centre is adjacent to the main auditorium of the conference centre providing excellent opportunities to develop teaching techniques and learning. Improved audiovisual links to theatre and the cardiac cath lab are installed as part of this development. The Beardmore Hotel and the integral conference centre attached to the Golden Jubilee Hospital is a unique arrangement in the UK and enables important national and ‘focus’ international meetings for the Heart and Lung specialties to share learning in the UK and beyond. 5 Scottish Innovation Centre The government recently announced an initial £100,000 national health and social care innovation fund, which aims to raise millions of pounds, to develop original and pioneering treatments for Scotland’s patients. The Golden Jubilee National Hospital will also work on behalf of NHS Scotland to raise funds for new initiatives from a variety of sources, including donations and European grants. New medical devices could be rolled out to Scottish hospitals more quickly under an innovative scheme being piloted by the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. Governance and Risk management The Board has a comprehensive programme that covers both clinical and research governance domains and all medical staff are expected to uphold clinical and non-clinical policies and be exemplar role models for all other medical and nonmedical staff. The importance of infection control, hand hygiene and dress code must be adhered to at all times. Patient safety underpins clinical practice and initiatives following the guidance of the SPSP and subsequent programmes apply to all staff. Medical staff are required to undergo annual appraisal meeting the requirements for revalidation that will be directed by the GMC. The Medical Director is the Responsible Officer for the Board and he/she will ensure that an appropriate appraisal process and a nominated appraiser are in place. The appointee will be accountable to the Medical Director for matters related to the GMC’s guidance on Good Medical Practice and the Duties of the Doctor. Any concerns raised relating to GMC guidance are referred to the Medical Director. Junior medical staff and education Junior staffing in the cardiology department is provided by a resident on-call 1 in 8 rota populated by a combination of research fellows, fellows attached to the advanced heart failure and adult congenital services and 3 CCU fellows In addition, cardiology trainees in the West of Scotland in year ST4 and above rotate through the CCU and provide middle grade out-of-hours cover. Finally, sub-specialty trainees undertake modular training in the GJNH during their final two years. The Board is committed to developing a strong educational ethos within the department and the new appointee will be expected to provide education and support to these staff members and develop the key educational skills to be an effective clinical supervisor. There is a forward thinking Department of Education and Learning led by a manager, Mrs Cathy Fox. All medical and dental staff employed by the Centre are expected to comply with the agreed health and safety policies. The appointee will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with him/her and will devote time to this on a regular basis. If appropriate he/she will be named in the contracts of junior doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as a main source of advice to such doctors on their careers. The successful candidate(s) will normally be required to live within 30 minutes drive of GJNH.
