Introduction:
The Dress Regulations policy covers all uniforms worn by our volunteers and Patient Transport staff. It details the
organisation’s requirements for all operational, ceremonial and casual dress and must be strictly adhered to at all times.
No deviation from these regulations will be tolerated and lack of conformity to the necessary standards detailed in this
document will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.

Personal Appearance

Face is to be clean; make-up discreet; men’s facial hair to be trimmed and tidy.

Hair to be clean, trimmed and tidy and not to fall over the line of the top of the collar. If hair is held back, it
should be secured with a black hair tie.

Hands must be clean, with short clean fingernails. No nail varnish to be worn.
Mixed Dress
Ceremonial and operational dress is never to be worn together. Similarly, items of uniform are not to be combined with
casual dress under any circumstances.
Condition
All items of uniform must be clean, pressed and in good repair. Shoes must be clean and well polished.
Badges
Only authorised badges are to be worn with ceremonial uniform. No badges are to be worn with operational uniform.
Jewellery
Jewellery is not to be worn on operational duty or at formal occasions. Exceptions are as follows:

A plain “wedding style” flat ring which must be covered by disposable gloves when undertaking operational
duties.

A stud or sleeper style plain single earring (only one per ear).

Items detailing medical conditions or history such as ‘medi-alert’ bracelets or chains.
Cadets
All Cadets will wear the Cadet uniform until transferring to the Adult section at the age of 18.
Operational duties/observers?
Badgers
All Badgers will wear the Badger uniform until transferring to the Cadet section at the age of 10 or 11.
Casual Dress
St. John Cymru-Wales polo shirts and hoodies may be worn for non-formal and non-operational functions, such as adhoc meetings, training sessions, conferences and divisional meetings. These can be worn with jeans, trousers or skirts
at the volunteers’ discretion and a range of colours are available from the Supplies department.

Adult & Cadet Operational Dress
To be worn for all operational work without exception by both volunteers and Patient Transport Services. Items of
ceremonial dress are never to be worn for operational duty under any circumstances.
All-Weather High Visibility Coat
High-vis lightweight and waterproof knee-length coat with St. John Cymru-Wales logo on left breast, reflective logo
across back– both heat-sealed and (where relevant), special duty roles on reflective insert below logo on back. With
epaulettes for rank slides, radio loops, regulation pockets and appropriate fastenings.
High Visability Softshell Jacket
High-vis and kelly green softshell mid layer bomber jacket with St. John Cymru-Wales logo embroidered on left breast,
reflective logo across back and (where relevant), special duty roles below logo on back – both heat-sealed. With
epaulettes for rank slides, radio loops, regulation pockets and appropriate fastenings.
Shirts
Kelly green shirt with St. John Cymru-Wales logo embroidered on left breast, with popper front fastenings and epaulettes
for rank slides, radio loops and regulation pockets, available in short or long sleeves.
T-Shirts
White t-shirt to be worn under shirts.
Trousers
Kelly green combat style trousers with elasticated waist, regulation pockets and padded knees.
Jumpsuit
Kelly green combat style jumpsuit with padded knees may be worn for specialist duties at the discretion of the Regional
Commissioner (?)
Belt
Plain black leather belt with metal clasp.
Footwear
Approved Magnum (which styles?) boots.
Socks
Plain black socks only to be worn.
Head Dress
In cold weather, a kelly green beanie may be worn and in hot weather, a kelly green baseball cap may be worn at the
volunteer’s discretion. Helmets?
Black Gloves
In cold weather, black gloves may be worn at the volunteer’s discretion.
Medals & Medal Ribbons
No medals or medal ribbons are to be worn on Operational dress under any circumstances
Rank Slides
Slides are supplied in pairs and should be worn by Adults and Cadets.

Ceremonial Dress
To be worn for inspections, investitures, church parades and similar formal ceremonial events.
Adult Jacket
Tailored, black jacket in a polyester/wool fabric, with the breast badge fitted to the right breast and metal buttons, bearing
the insignia of St John Wales.
Adult/Cadet Jumper
A polyester/wool jumper may be worn instead of a jacket, with the breast badge sewn onto the right breast for adults.
Cadets jumpers would display the St. John Cymru-Wales logo on the left breast and ‘Cadet’ on the right breast.
Badger Sweatshirts
Black sweatshirt with the St. John Cymru-Wales logo on the left breast and ‘Badger’ on the right breast.
Adult/Cadet Shirts
White shirt with epaulettes for rank slides, available in short or long sleeves with St. John Cymru-Wales logo on right
breast?
Cadet shirts would display the St. John Cymru-Wales logo on the left breast and ‘Cadet’ on the right breast?
Badger Polo Shirts
White polo shirt with the St. John Cymru-Wales logo on the left breast and ‘Badger’ on the right breast?
Adult/Cadet Clip on Tie
Black clip-on tie (only to be worn for safety reasons) available in two lengths.
Adult/Cadet St John Belt
50mm black and white striped webbing belt with metal clasp.
Trousers
Plain black, straight leg trousers, with hem not reaching the floor (no jeans, leggings or sports trousers).
Badgers may wear grey or black school trousers.
Skirts
Plain black knee length skirt with the hem a maximum of 5cm above or below the knee.
Badgers may wear grey or black school skirts.
Footwear
Black leather, laced or plain, with maximum heel height of 5 cm.
Socks/ Tights/Stockings
Plain black socks, tights or stockings may be worn.
Badgers may wear white socks.
Formal Head Dress
Adult Male
Black polyester covered cap with self-covered peak, white cap band and incorporated chinstrap. A black nylon cover is
available to protect cap in wet weather.

White fabric gloves to be worn for review order. When not being worn, they should be carried in a pocket or pouch, not
on show.
Adult Medal Ribbons
Appropriate ribbons are to be worn, in rows of four, on the left breast.
Adult Medals
Appropriate medals can be worn in rows of four, on the left breast.
Adult/Cadet Rank Slides
Slides are supplied in pairs. Rank markings are embossed, with the inscription “St. John Cymru-Wales”.
Colour Slides for Medical Professionals:

Adult Gorget Patches
Gorget patches are worn by officers. Male officers wear full size patches and female officers wear a smaller size on their
jackets.
Clip on gorgets may be worn by all officers on the shirt collar if a jumper or shirtsleeves only are worn instead of a jacket.
Presidents
Presidents, Deputy and Vice-Presidents may wear civilian clothes with the designated badge instead of their uniform.
Region/County Presidents may wear the pin brooch in the left buttonhole position, of a crown in scarlet and cross in white
enamel. Other President ranks wear the crown in rhodium silver metal.
Presidents may also wear the Wales Shoulder Flash on each arm and if relevant to their training, a First Aid strip and/or
colour specific professional rank slides.

APPENDIX 3 - Badger Authorised Badges
Badger Subjects
To be worn in the order achieved on the right arm, 13mm from shoulder seam.
Badges should be placed in two’s with a 13mm gap between them. They should be placed
directly underneath each other. Badges gained after Super Badger has been achieved should be
worn in a vertical line of up to three badges on right arm 50mm from cuff seam.
Welcome Badger / Badger Paw Awards
Worn on left arm 13mm from shoulder seam.
Only one Paw Award to be worn at a time, to be replaced by the next stage.
First Aid Strip (purple)
To be worn by Badgers that have completed Young Life Saver award. Strip to be worn 13mm
underneath the Badger Paw Award.
90 year Anniversary Badge
To be worn by Badgers who were members of the Brigade in 2008, 13mm under the First Aid
Strip.
Super Badger Badge
Replaces the Badger Paw Award when Super Badger Status is achieved.
To be worn on left arm 13mm from shoulder seam. The twelve achievement badges can be
retained on the uniform when the Super Badger is achieved. The Super Badger badge can be
worn subsequently on Cadet uniform and adult uniform if required.
Follow Me Badger Rank Markings
Fabric black and white sew on patches, to be worn on shoulders of jumper. Only to be worn by
Badgers once promotion approved (BFW 7).
Lanyards
Red Badger of the Year lanyard to be worn by County Badger of the year. A gold lanyard will be
awarded for the National Badger of the Year. These should be worn over left shoulder and
secured with a discreet safety pin mid chest.
Year Badges
Year badges to be worn, 13mm below Badger paw award/ Super Badger badge on left arm. The
number on the badge should correspond with the number of years the Badger has been a
member.
Brave Badger
To be worn by 13mm below St John Cymru Wales logo only by those approved by NHQ.
National Competition Winner Badge
To be worn 20mm from cuff seam on right arm.
