Title 1 Technology Academy for Instructional Support Staff
Module Description
Participants will become proficient in using Word as a professional tool to increase
work efficiency, and create instructional documents for use with students. They will
be able to guide students in the classroom in creating documents, such as a student
generated class newsletter, for learning with emphasis on connection to Common
Core Standards and NV State Technology Standards.

Course Objectives
 Participants will be able to create, open, save, save as, and locate a Word
document.
 Participants will be able to navigate the Home tab of the Ribbon to edit text,
edit paragraphs and lists, edit styles, insert text boxes, shapes, and pictures,
and edit themes.
 Participants will be able to navigate the Layout tab of the Ribbon to change
the document orientation, create breaks, add columns, and edit page
backgrounds.
 Participants will be able to navigate the Document Elements tab in the
Ribbon to view the header and footer, and add word art.
 Participants will be able to navigate the Table tab in the ribbon to create a
table and edit the table style.
 Participants will be able to navigate the Charts tab in the Ribbon to create a
chart.
 Participants will be able to navigate the SmartArt tab in the Ribbon to create
a Smart Art graphic.
 Participants will be able to use the Review tab to track changes and make
comments on documents.
 Participants will be able to use a template to create a document.
 Participants will be able to show and hide non-printing characters to reveal
the formatting of a document.
 Participants will be able to use cut, copy, paste, undo and redo buttons.
 Participants will be able to use keyboard shortcuts for commonly used
features.
 Participants will be able to use the format painter to copy desired formatting
from one part of the document to another.
 Participants will be able to find and replace text.
 Participants will be able to use the Format Picture sub-tab to change the
formatting of clip art and other graphics.
 Participants will be able to use the Review tab to track changes and make
comments on documents.
 Participants will be able to suggest ideas for technology integration using the
above listed skills.

Part 1 (60 minutes)
 Welcome (5 minutes)
o Participant sign-in, discuss class objectives, address break schedule,
address Impact Map, and address participation expectations.
 Home Tab (20 Minutes)
o Demonstrate how to change fonts, paragraphs, styles, and themes in the
Home tab.
o Demonstrate how to insert text boxes, shapes and pictures in the Home
tab.
o Allow time for participants to practice these skills using text from the
website linked below.

 Layout Tab (20 Minutes)
o Demonstrate how to adjust page setup, margins, text layout, page
background and grid in the Layout Tab.
o Allow time for participants to practice these skills using their existing
practice document.
 Document Elements (15 Minutes)
o Demonstrate how to insert pages, header and footer, and text elements in
the Document Elements tab.
o Allow time for participants to practice these skills using their existing
practice document.

 Tables Tab (15 Minutes)
o Demonstrate how to add a table in the Tables tab.
o Demonstrate how to adjust table options, table styles and draw borders
in Table tab.
o Allow time for participants to practice these skills using their existing
practice document.
 Charts Tab (15 Minutes)
o Demonstrate how to insert charts.
o Demonstrate how to adjust chart layouts and chart styles.
o Allow time for participants to practice these skills using their existing
practice document.
 SmartArt (20 Minutes)
o Demonstrate how to insert and edit SmartArt.
o Allow time for participants to practice these skills using their existing
practice document.

o Demonstrate the ease with which template can be edited using a greeting
card and a certificate as an example.
o Allow time for participants to choose a template and edit it to fit their
needs in the classroom.
o Allow time for participants to send their document to their co-teacher for
use in the fall.

o Demonstrate how to use the suggested sites with graphics fro student
projects.
o Allow time for participants to explore lesson ideas and templates to find
one that they could use with students in the classroom.
o Allow time for participants to work with a lesson idea and create a
sample document.
