Course Description and Objectives
Emphasizes mathematical reasoning, mathematical habits of thought, mathematical decision-making,
mathematical communication, and the use of mathematical symbols, techniques and computations. Topics
include proportional reasoning, mathematics of personal finance, probability, descriptive statistics, and growth
and decay models (linear and exponential).
Required Materials
 Scientific Calculator (TI-30XS Multiview strongly recommended, if you don’t already own one)
 An activated student e-mail account from WWCC
 Access Code for MyMathLab (available online or at the WWCC bookstore)
o This includes access to the textbook online.
o If you have used MyMathLab for MATH 107 previously, you may continue to use the same
account and access code.
 OPTIONAL: A hard copy of the textbook: Using and Understanding Mathematics: A Quantitative
Reasoning Approach, Fifth Edition by Bennett and Briggs.
Lessons
Since this is an online course, you will not be sitting in a classroom taking down notes as I am going through
example problems on the board. In place of that, you will likely need to do more work to understand each topic.
I expect that you will read through each section in the textbook BEFORE you complete the homework
assignment for that section. The textbook can be found by clicking on the “TEXTBOOK” button in
MyMathLab and navigating to the correct section of the book. There are also videos for most sections (also
found by clicking on the “TEXTBOOK” button) that you may need to watch if reading through the section is
not enough. If you are still struggling after reading the textbook and watching the videos, please use other
resources such as the TLC on campus (if possible) or by contacting me! I am teaching this class face-to-face (on
campus) at the same pace as the online course and will record daily lessons on Canvas. If you wish to listen to
those lessons, feel free to access them on Canvas. They’ll be ready around 2 pm each day.
Online Homework
Assignments are to be submitted in MyMathLab. Usually, two homework assignments will be given for each
section covered and both assignments will be due at the same time –the day after the section was posted on the
pacing guide. No late assignments will be accepted. The first assignment (labeled “Homework”) has help
options available online, the second (labeled “Skills Check”) is shorter, has no help, and is used to assess
learning on the concepts. Your lowest homework score will be dropped at the end of the quarter. We will
occasionally have worksheets or handouts for homework – those will be due the next class day. You may print
these out by accessing the Course Documents tab in MyMathLab. Before completing the homework for each
section, I recommend you read the textbook, watch the textbook video pertaining to each section OR watch my
class recording. These are all valuable resources to aid you in understanding the material. You will also find
several other resources available to you as you work through the assignments. You may click on “View an
Example” to see an example of a related problem. You may also click on “Help Me Solve This” to get help
doing the problem (but then you are required to do a new problem all on your own!) If you have not answered
the problem correctly after three tries, you can click on “Similar Exercise” and try a new problem. For this
reason, it is possible for you to attain 100% on every assignment. I STRONGLY suggest that you keep an
organized notebook with all of your homework assignments clearly labeled and worked out section-by-section,
problem-by-problem. You will find this very useful when completing the quizzes, reviewing for exams and
when asking questions on particular problems.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given throughout the quarter. All quizzes are scheduled and noted on the pacing guide. Look
for the red asterisks on the pacing guide – that is a signal that I expect something back from you, either on paper
that you turned in to my office, or an electronic copy that you e-mailed to me. Your lowest quiz score will be
dropped at the end of the quarter. You will need to print out these quizzes, complete the problems and then
return to me (by scanning and e-mailing or dropping by my office) by Friday at 2 pm of the same week that they
are posted on the pacing guide. I will grade them that day and post the answers online in the Course
Documents tab of MyMathLab. Because the answers will be posted that afternoon, I will not accept any late
quizzes. If you would like your quizzes returned, please stop by my office or e-mail me and I can scan and
email to you. Quizzes do not need to be proctored, but I expect you to complete them on your own.
Exams
There will be four exams, each worth 100 points, as well as a final exam. All exams must be proctored and
taken at an approved testing center. You must show photo ID when you take your exams. You will have 90
minutes to complete the exams and three hours to complete the final exam. The exams will be paper and pencil
exams. You will not have access to the computer, notes, cell phones, or textbook. I will provide you with the
appropriate formula sheet(s) for the chapters being tested. You must provide your own writing utensil and
scientific calculator. Please show all work directly on the exam. Each exam is scheduled over a three-day
period to allow for flexible testing. These three days are the day before, the day of, and the day after the date
posted on the pacing guide (pacing guide is found under the “Course Documents” tab in MyMathLab). If you
should miss an exam due to illness or emergency, you must provide medical or other documentation to take the
exam late. It is extremely rare to be allowed to take an exam late, and such permission is at my discretion.
Every late exam will receive a minimum 20% reduction in score.
Walla Walla students can test at the WWCC Testing Lab. You will find their hours and other useful
information at http://www.wwcc.edu/CMS/index.php?id=3586. Remember that you must begin your exam at
least 90 minutes (three hours for the final exam) before the Testing Lab closes.
Clarkston students will need to schedule exams during the specified dates with Shelly Bush who can be reached
at 509.758.1772 or shelly.bush@wwcc.edu.
If you are not in the vicinity of the Walla Walla or the Clarkston campus, you will need to locate a certified
proctor at a local college, university, or library. Be sure to identify a proctor immediately! I will need
documentation and verification of the proctor’s credentials before releasing any exams. This could take up to a
week, so you will want to start working on this immediately. Please e-mail me with the details of your
proctoring situation as soon as you have a plan. If a proctor is not arranged at least a week before the first
exam, you will NOT be allowed to take the exam.
