EXHIBITION
There are three exhibitions in Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2015 available to Open
Call applications.
Please read the descriptions of each below and select one exhibition area only.
 BLACK AND WHITE NIGHT
ARTIST EXHIBITION, STATEMENT BY ARTIST, JR
"I want to turn the city inside out for one night with the help and energy of
the community, so that Toronto creates a powerful image that will be
remembered." – JR
 THE WORK OF WIND
CURATED BY CHRISTINE SHAW
In The Work of Wind, the Beaufort Scale of Wind Force will become a
geopoetic diagram of prediction and premonition. Created in 1807 by the
British sea admiral Sir Francis Beaufort, the scale is a 13-part index
measuring the effects of wind force and was first used for the practical
navigation of 19th century ocean space. The scale, in an exquisite 110
words, captures the dynamic nature of wind and its potential to compose
at sea and decompose on land. While the title, The Work of Wind, might
suggest a weather project, it is not about wind but of wind, of the forces of
composition and decomposition aligned with social, economic, and
environmental change in the 21st century. Drawing on the language of the
scale – breaking, scattering, drifting, tumbling, rolling, driving, whistling,
rustling, extending, raising, swaying, inconveniencing, impeding,
damaging, uprooting – The Work of Wind will unfurl the 13 forces from 0
(Calm) to 12 (Hurricane), and punctuate Toronto’s Waterfront with 13 artist

projects moving between modes of allegory, documentation, and creative
adaptation strategies. From works of manifest tangibility and poetic
materiality to more activist, conceptual approaches, the combined effects
of this zone will offer an operatic experience of the elemental forces,
compositional forms, and geopolitical processes of our contemporary
times.
 HTOUS / HTRON: THE NEW COORDINATES FOR AMERICA
CURATED BY AGUSTIN PÉREZ RUBIO
This open call is intended for artists who are interested in proposing work
that deals with the new inversion of the Americas. Following the writings of
Torres Garcia, the Uruguayan painter and thinker: “Our North is the
South,” this project intends to overthrow the idea of centre and periphery
that rules in the Americas since post-colonial studies by trying to invert
both time and space. In this regard, the main focus of the projects
presented should not only deal with the realities between North and South
in the Americas, but also with their different political, social, intellectual,
religious and sexual conflicts. This idea of displacement, changing time, of
inversion, relocation and confrontation could be a suitable breeding
ground for the creation of at least 12 hours of instability in the city of
Toronto. The most important thing would be to keep the concepts of
geopolitics and time as determinants, and also to provide a detailed
description of where the project would take place.
