Speaking up for Libraries Philip Ardagh It’s just a resource that we have to hold onto as when its gone its going to be so difficult to get it back. Libraries are something that somebody would invent if they didn’t already exist. Gill Whitfield I’m speaking up for Libraries today because I feel pationately about Libraries. As a worker in Libraries I see how much benefit people get from libraries and I just hope that people recognise that. Dave Prentis Libraries consistently score high satisfaction rates in our local communities. But in the past 20 months since this coalition came to power over ten percent of our libraries have closed. Robert Wilfort I’m speaking up for libraries today, well one of the main reasons is Eida really. We use our local library a lot and its just such a wonderful resource. Candy Gourlay I grew up in a country where there was no public library system. I grew up looking for books but they were not available to me. I just visited the Philipinnes where I visited libraries that are being built by communities poorer than you can imaging and then I come back to this country where I live where libraries are being taken down. I think it’s shocking that that’s happening. Alan Gibbons My mum and dad used to scrape to get me a few books and I’ve got a shelf of books as a child but eighty percent of the books I read as a kid where out of the public library. That first book that was put into my hand by a librarian that felt sorry for me was probably one of the great inspirations of my life. Lydia Syson In the community that I live I can see that libraries are absolutely crucial as without them there would be children on the streets after school every single day. Jane Avis We have a need for libraries that is vital of our education and survival. You just need to speak who have dementia. They come into the libraries because it is a good place to be. Bill Guy Books are very expensive. Old people like myself cant afford to buy books so it is essential we go to the library. So I would like the government to keep the libraries open so that people like myself and kids can go there and borrow books and educate ourselves. Different people saying We’re proud to be speaking up for libraries.
