Has anyone ever heard of Serena Williams? In case you didn’t know, she is the number
one ranked tennis player in women’s singles. You may know that already, but who knew that she
is the only female tennis player to win over 60 million dollars in prize money? That’s just one of
the many facts I will be telling you about Serena Williams. I’m Kelly Anderson, and today I am
going to tell you about Serena Williams’s background information, her tennis career, and some
interesting facts about her.
I will start by informing you about her background information. Serena Williams was
born September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan. She is the youngest of five daughters. She has a
full sister, Venus Williams, who is also a tennis star, and three half-sisters, Yetunde, Lyndrea,
and Isha Price. She has a mother Orancene Price and her father Richard Williams. He was the
one who inspired her to start tennis at such a young age.
Next I will be talking about her tennis career. As I said before, she started at a very young
age. In 1991 at only ten years of age, she was ranked number one in the 10 and under league.
When she was 14, she turned pro. Two years after she turned pro, she was ranked number 99 in
the world. During her career she won many famous singles tournaments on her way up to
number one. A few examples of those are The US open (eight different years), The French open
(two different years), The Australian open (six different years), and Wimbledon (seven different
years). She also has an Olympic gold medal for singles and three Olympic gold medals for
doubles. Today, she is still playing in many tournaments and is currently ranked number one.
I will end by telling you some interesting facts about her. Her fame was not only for
tennis, she is also in magazines and films. Also, she is supported by brands. Her first supporter
was Puma who she signed a contract with only a year after she got out of high school. During her
career there were also many low points, many of those due to medical conditions. Some of the
injuries that made her withdraw from tournaments were injuries to the knee and elbow, and a
serious foot inflammation, influenza, and a tear in her foot. Even through her most serious
injuries, she continued to play and never gave up, which I admire most about her. Another
interesting fact about Serena is that she started the Serena Williams Foundation. The Serena
Williams Foundation basically has two mission statements: to help youth whose families have
been destroyed by crime, and also to help youth receive an education.
That’s a summary of Serena Williams’s life: her family and background information, her
tennis career, and a few interesting facts about her. Serena is an amazing tennis player which I
hope to be like someday. I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about her as much as I have.
