Position Announcement: Postdoctoral Scholar
A research position at the rank of Post-doctoral Scholar is available in the Department of Animal
Science, Iowa State University in the area of Animal Breeding and Genetics / Animal Science with particular emphasis on gilt development and sow lifetime productivity.
Candidate will be expected to have a Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics or Animal Science with expertise in statistical design and data analysis. The candidate should be proficient or able to quickly learn use of computer software such as SAS, R, Excel, Word and other standard software packages as needed. It will be expected that the candidate demonstrate capacity for integrative thinking (i.e., systems biology), critical scientific thinking, creativity, excellent organizational skills, ability to multitask, and passion for science. The individual will be expected to perform data analysis, present research results at conferences, train students, help in writing of grant proposals, and write manuscripts for publication. Salary is $45,000 per annum and the contract is written for 1 year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, pending performance and funding availability. Post doctorate and Pre doctorate Associates are eligible for medical, pharmacy, vision and dental coverage. Post doctorate associates are eligible and are encouraged to participate in courses to expand their skill set.
The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for assembling; collating and analyzing data from long-term study examining sow lifetime productivity. The study will take place in commercial facilities and involve collaboration among several universities, USDA and National Pork Board. The successful candidate must be proficient in speaking and writing in English and have a valid U.S. driver’s license in order to travel to the farms where the animals will be located. It is expected that the individual would be responsible for the initial draft of reports required by the National Pork Board with regard to the project, and for the initial draft of the primary manuscripts generated from this study (for which the incumbent would be first author). First authorship or co-authorship on additional manuscripts from the project would depend on the incumbent’s contributions to subsequent manuscripts.
