Postdoctoral / Project Scientist position for small grains breeder

We seek to incorporate a small grains breeder to the University of California, Davis Small Grains
breeding program. The selected candidate is expected to dedicate ~40% of its time to wheat,
~40% to barley and ~20% to oats. The UCD barley and oat breeder is retiring soon and the
selected candidate is expected to collaborate with him for a short period to facilitate the transfer
of knowledge and materials and then take the leadership of these programs, while continue
collaborating with the wheat breeding program. The selected candidate is expected to interact
with growers and industry and promote the developed germplasm. Experience in small grain
field research and genetics is essential and ability to integrate marker assisted selection in the
program is a plus. An MS or PhD in plant breeding or genetics is required. The selected
candidate is expected to develop commercial varieties and to do research in practical problems
affecting small grain production in California. The position is initially for one year but support is
available for five years depending on candidate’s performance. Multiple sources of industry
funding and grant opportunities are available to develop a long term self-sustained program. The
appointee is expected to actively pursue these funding opportunities. The position is open for
Postdoc or Project Scientist depending on experience. Salary will be also adjusted according to
experience. If the candidate is initially hired as a Postdoc the position is expected to transition to
a Project Scientist position with more independence and responsibilities.
