HURRICANE SANDY swept through the Caribbean Oct. 25 before continuing up the
East Coast and making landfall Oct. 29 in central New Jersey. The storm has caused record
flooding and devastation on the Eastern seaboard. Episcopal Relief & Development is
working with affected dioceses to assess needs and provide critical, life-saving assistance.
Your support for ERD is needed now. Please donate securely to the Hurricane Sandy Fund
at https://www.er-d.org/. There is a minimum one-time online donation amount of $10, but
ERD appreciates all contributions. If you wish to make a donation of any amount by check,
please mail a check to Episcopal Relief & Development, P.O. Box 7058 Merrifield, VA
22116-7058. To donate by phone, please call 1.855.312.HEAL (4325). Thank you!
KERNELS OF THANKS: Most of us have heard the story of the first Thanksgiving held
in the fall of 1621. A feast was held with the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag to celebrate the
first harvest of the new colony. And for 3 days there was great feasting, praying, and playing.
But do you know what happened next? The story says they had been severely
underestimated their harvest and how many of them it could sustain. And so the only the
only way to survive was to cut their allotted provisions in half. However by November the
ship Fortune arrived with 35 new settlers who had nothing. The harvest of 1622 was greatly
lacking and starvation continued. By the spring of 1623, rations had been reduced to only 5
kernels of corn per day. That summer the Pilgrims fasted and prayed for an entire day in
hopes the drought would end and their crops would be saved. The next morning their
prayers had been answered and a soft rain fell for 2 weeks. The crops grew and were
bountiful. Legend holds Thanksgiving that year was a little different. For the first course all
were given an empty plate that held only 5 kernels of corn. Each pilgrim stood one by one
and named a blessing for each kernel.
There are extra “kernals” in Daniel Hall. Please take a kernel or two or five and share
your blessings and thanksgivings from the past year. You can return them to Cameron in
person, by placing them in the offering plate, or by returning to the church office. Watch as
our Kernels grow into a Corn Cob as we join together in praising God and harvesting our
thanks. "Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever." Psalm 107:1
(NIV)
CHOIRMASTER’S CORNER:
Today’s anthem was composed by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548-1611), the most prominent
Spanish composer during the High Renaissance. Victoria’s style may be seen as an
outgrowth of the deeply spiritual revival that took place in the Roman Catholic Church
during the Counter-Reformation. During this era, the Roman Catholic hierarchy undertook
a series of reforms that included the development of spiritual movements emphasizing
personal devotion and mysticism. For musicians in sympathy with these mystical ideals,
sacred music became an outlet for personal expression, and composers such as Victoria
sought to convey the meaning of their texts in music of great emotional impact. This
morning the choir, directed by Wanda Cantrell from the organ, will sing Victoria’s setting of
“Jesu, the very thought of Thee” in an English translation. The deep intimacy conveyed in
this text is enhanced by Victoria’s sensitive harmonic language, which includes numerous
expressive dissonances that intensify the emotion before resolving to more soothing
consonant harmonies. You may notice that the overall harmonic “feel” of the anthem is
minor instead of major. In the twenty-first century, we generally associate sad texts with the
minor mode, and happy texts with the major mode. Musicians in Victoria’s day, however,
had not yet established those conventional associations. As you listen to the minor
harmonic language, do not look for sadness in the text because this is a text of joyful
intimacy.
