Kent Periscopes is a rapidly growing company, revenue and shipments have increased by 50% in the past 12 months and as the only UK supplier of periscopes, Kent Periscopes is becoming a major player in this niche market. This is an exceptional career opportunity for an experienced Manufacturing / Operations Manager. The role plays a significant part in managing the company’s continued high growth and will allow the successful candidate to make a positive impact. This senior management position will take responsibility for production, procurement and planning to coincide with the company’s increase in order book and move to new larger premises. Our clients are major international organisations who require high quality and on time delivery. As part of the Senior Management Team, the employee will be jointly responsible for contributing towards the achievement of the company’s strategic and operational targets and overall business aims. The role carries direct managerial responsibility for Production, Purchasing and Programme Managers. The main responsibilities will include helping to achieve the company’s sales turnover, on time delivery and profit targets by: 1. Ensuring that sales orders are manufactured correctly, cost effectively and delivered on time. a) Ensure orders reach customer build specification and quality requirements. b) Communicate with relevant employees / departments and co-ordinate all relevant inputs to ensure production output and on time delivery targets are achieved. c) Plan, schedule and review workload to ensure production output and on time delivery targets are achieved cost effectively. d) Ensure that the Production Department has the necessary amenities, manpower, competence, skill, knowledge, plant and tooling required in order to achieve production targets. 2. Managing the Purchasing Department to ensure material is purchased cost effectively and available for production when required. 3. Managing stock control to ensure components are receipted, located, stored and transferred correctly and that the company’s inventory is accurate. Job Description Production Contract Review / Capacity Planning Ensure the Production Department has sufficient time to manufacture and deliver products according to the customer’s request and time schedule. Planning and Scheduling of Workload a) Manage customer order / schedule requirements through liaison with the Programme Management Department. b) Pre-plan production and deploy a weekly prioritised work schedule to the Production Department with appropriate deadline targets. c) Set, monitor and review work load schedule. Production Control a) Monitor and review production progress against deadline targets to ensure on time delivery. b) Adjust the production schedule as required and effectively communicate any change to delivery dates. c) Monitor and review manufacturing operations to ensure correct quality standards. d) Ensure that all production related activity is time and cost effective. Quality Control a) Ensure all working environments including production / quality processes and active equipment are conducive to producing a high quality product and service. b) Monitor production activity to ensure that appropriate manufacturing methods are employed and that sufficient due care is taken to meet customer build and quality specifications. c) Ensure rejected / non-conforming products are rectified as a high priority. Procurement and Inventory Management Procurement Source, negotiate and manage: a) Purchase of all materials and services for production. b) Outsourcing of full / part assemblies through strategic partners. Inventory Management a) Organise, plan and co-ordinate all inventory management activities. b) Ensure that both goods inward and distribution departments are well organised and adequately resourced. c) Ensure incoming products are processed and managed appropriately in line with company procedure. d) Ensure materials are ready and available for production as and when required. e) Ensure that any late materials that impact on production are chased and followed up promptly. f) Ensure sub contract processes are received and suppliers are chased accordingly. g) Ensure materials are ready and available for production as and when required. Operational Performance Monitor and manage production KPI’s a) Achieve the company’s on time delivery target. b) Control all associated operational and manufacturing costs according to the prevailing annual budget forecast. Develop and Implement Operational Improvements a) Manage change to meet current business requirements. b) Implement manufacturing improvement processes and systems to reduce inventory, increase throughput and minimise costs. Develop a High Performance Workforce a) Promote and uphold company performance standards and ideology (on time delivery, quality, lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, housekeeping and work ethic). Person Specification Essential Requirements a) Possess a broad background in mechanical engineering / manufacturing with a wide range of knowledge on manufacturing and production processes, preferably sheet metal related. b) Possess experience of a sub contract environment. c) Ability to read and interpret mechanical engineering and technical drawings and have a working understanding of: - Production planning & scheduling. - Procurement and MRP. - Stock management systems. - Quality management systems. - Health and safety best practice and legislation. - Continuous improvement tools within a low volume, high quality Manufacturing facility. d) Possess a working understanding of leadership principles and management best practice. e) Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills for a demanding and customer focused working environment. f) Able to manage time and workload effectively and successfully hit targets. g) Driving licence. h) Employment is subject to a satisfactory criminal records check. Desirable Requirements a) Ideally educated to HNC / HND / Degree level in Mechanical Engineering and / or have a relevant professional institute qualification. b) Experience of operating within the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System.
