To introduce and elaborate issues in UK political, social and cultural life. To examine the background to current public debates, controversies and moral panics.

To outline necessary background information in the political and social structure of the state and its component parts to assist in the understanding of current developments.

To examine the nature of shifting identities and loyalties in the contemporary period.

To examine a selection of currents in cultural life, drawn from the literary and artistic scenes.

To investigate with special focus how British society is represented in cinema, with examination of a wide range of cinematic movements in the UK in the post-war period.

To assist in the further development of the students’ advanced level English comprehension, and written and spoken production. To assist in their development as prospective translators, interpreters and language professionals with English as a working language, who will require a knowledge of cultural life in the UK.

16. Syllabus

British Political and Cultural life

Political structure and nature of British democracy. Operation of the electoral process and the government party in office. Issues in artistic and literary life: cultural prizes; key artists and writers of the moment. Housing and contemporary urban design and planning. Religion and morality. UK relations with EU and its institutions. Identity in the contemporary UK and its relationship to the devolutionary process. Taught by means of weekly 2-hour lecture/discussion class.

British Film

Social realism and non-realistic approaches. Key historical movements: documentary movement; 40s realism and melodrama; Ealing comedy; Free Cinema; New Wave;

1980s state of the nation cinema. Contemporary cinema (post-2000) and their relation to previous. Taught by means of weekly tutorial.
