(NOTE: Real colors, e.g.: Real Cadmium-Barium colors should be bought, not “hue” colors“hue” is synonymous with “fake”. Pre-tested brand (from Grumbacher) is recommended
for Cadmiums because of a barium additive that allows them to mix better with other
colors)
Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin
Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Viridian or Pthalo-cyanine Green
Liquin Original Painting Medium by Windsor & Newton.
IL3580 Landscape Painting
Backpack: to hold everything that doesn’t fit in the French easel.
Portable Easel: It’s cheaper to buy a portable easel. With a backpack to hold your paints, palette and solvent,
you’ll be good to go. If it gets windy, tent stakes help tie the light easels to the earth.
French Easel: A French easel is a combination paint box and easel. It’s versatile and you will be glad you bought
it. You can purchase a French easel at the RMCAD book store or from Guiry’s, Meininger’s or
Michael’s for about $100. I like my Half French Easel, because it’s lighter and easier to carry.
Oil Paints: Use the colors you have in your paint box. I recommend a double primary set that includes Lemon
Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Deep, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, and
Cerulean Blue (or Thalo Blue, green shade), Of course you’ll also use Titanium White,
Clove Oil: A few drops mixed into each pile of paint on your Masterson’s Palette will keep the paint on the Palette wet
longer.
Liquin Painting Medium, Original Formula: brush this onto your Canvas before beginning the landscape, in order to
dry the Painting faster.
Brushes: I recommend filberts for their versatility. A large, medium and small bristle filbert all you really need.
But for softer work, it helps to get a large, medium and small sable. Buy flats (long hairs and squared tip)
and a small liner brush. Keep in mind that good brushes are expensive, but definitely worth it. Cheap
brushes
are unresponsive to your touch, wear out easily and get raggedy. You end up replacing them faster,
and therefore, it costs you more. For watercolors, a variety of sizes of wash brushes is needed, and
recommended: a #2 Series 7 Winsor and Newton Watercolor brush (regular length, not short hair).
The Masters Brush Cleaner: If you buy expensive or cheap brushes, it pays to spend extra on good brush cleaner. I
recommend the Masters, in its characteristic brown, circular container. It’ll clean dirty brushes and they
even say that dried on paint can be removed with it. A cheaper alternative is to purchase a bar of Ivory
soap-I use it and it works fine.
Turpentine: Odorless Mineral Spirits (Lowe’s, Home Depot)
Watercolors: a set of warm and cool watercolors.
Markers: Regular sized Sharpie Marker, and Gray Markers: 30%, 50%, 70%, also bring a white pastel or white colored pencil for
corrections.
Canvas Boards:
For quick color studies 5”x”7, 6”x 8” canvas panels, final paintings will be 11” x 14”, 12” x 16”, or 16” x 20”
For the final painting we’ll use 18 x 24 inch stretched canvas.
Watercolor: medium weight cold-press is recommended. Watercolor Illustration board is more expensive, but would
work as well.
Paint Rags: Old cotton t-shirts work best. Cut up into 5-inch squares makes them easier to use.
Paper Towels
Garbage bags/Plastic grocery bags: for dirty rags, paper towels,
Coffee Can with lid: including a smaller can, upside down, punched with holes for mineral spirits or turpentine.
Small sketchbook: Ring bound--not book bound and pencil/pen for quick thumbnails and sketching.
Digital Camera: For reference photos.
Viewfinder: You can also purchase a viewfinder, which is an adjustable, gray plastic viewing window, meant to
help compose your picture. A cheap alternative-use your fingers.
Bug Repellent: They’re biting now. It was in the papers today.
Sun Block: Or you can look like a cooked lobster, your choice.
Dawn Liquid Detergent: For emulsifying your clothes, should you get some oil paint on them. Working in the
detergent, in quantity, on an oil blotch, will allow you to wash it away when you get home.
Painting Clothes: If you want to protect your clothes, wear a smock like the masters all did. At the Good Will you
can purchase cheap oversized shirts, specifically to pack and use for painting. Or wear old clothes that you don’t care
about. A wide brimmed or baseball hat.
Color Wheel: From your previous still life class. It helps with the color schemes.
Rubber/Vinyl Gloves: Finish Factor (Lowe’s) or Polyurethane black and white gloves (Home Depot or Lowe’s)
