ART III: Illustrated Dictionary Page NAME:_______________________________ LESSON FOCUS: This lesson focuses on creating a beautiful mixed-media illustration of a word on an old discarded dictionary page. VOCABULARY: Color: Element of art derived from reflected light. The sensation of color is aroused in the brain by response of the eyes to different wavelengths of light. Colored pencils: Waxy pencils with strong, durable colors. Contour drawing: Drawing the edges, or contours, of figures or objects. Font: The given to a style of type. Illustration: Drawing used to tell a story, give instructions, or make a product look attractive. Illustrator: An artist who creates the visual images that complement written words. Medium: Any material used to create art. Mixed-Media: Artwork in which several media are combined to obtain desired effects. Pastels: Chalks, that depending on the kind and amount of binder, can be powdery, waxy, or oily. They can be applied to high-quality surfaces, usually special pastel papers, by hand or with rubbing techniques. Available in both round and square sticks. Watercolor paints: Paints that consist of extremely fine, transparent pigments in a medium of water or gum and are available in tubes or sectioned pans. They result in a transparent effect that distinguishes this medium from other, more opaque paints. PROCEDURE: Choose and tear out an old dictionary page and decide on a word to illustrate. Brainstorm layouts and ideas and research as necessary (finding photos to work from, etc.). You must include the word on the page and it must be incorporated into the design both in placement and with the font style. Draw ideas on sketch paper. Choose the strongest composition, and lightly sketch in pencil, directly on the dictionary page. Outline with black permanent marker. Color with a combination of soft pastel and watercolor. When the drawing is complete, use a glue stick to glue the dictionary page onto black construction paper to give it better stability MATERIALS: Old dictionary to tear out your page from.
