School of Business Highlights 2009-2010 The School of Business is most proud to recognize its first 19 graduates of the new Master of Science in Accounting degree program today; congratulations! School of Business students, managing the Bjorkland Student Investment Fund, joined by Dean James Nolan and Center for Global Financial Studies Director, Dr. Eric Girard, joined Trustco Bank Corp executives to ring the opening bell at NASDAQ headquarters in Times Square on February 2, 2010. Associate Professor of Marketing and Management Cheryl Buff, Class of 1982, was selected as the recipient of the Siena College Jerome Walton Award for Excellence in Teaching for this past Academic Year. Ken Williams, Professional Specialist in Business Strategy, was selected as the Siena College 2010 “Instructor of the Year” by the Office of Student Affairs and the Student Senate. Assistant Professor of Management Deborah Kelly was named “Professor of the Year” by the local chapter of BETA GAMMA SIGMA, the National Honor Society for Students of AACSB - Accredited Business Schools. Professor of Marketing and Management Joseph Rosetti and Professor of Economics Scott Trees each celebrated 25 years of service at the College. Congratulations! Assistant Professor of Accounting Chester Brearey received a $10,000 grant from Pricewaterhouse Coopers Charitable Foundation to investigate new ways of bringing International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) into the classroom. Commencing with the Class of 2014, the School of Business will award separate Bachelor of Science degrees in distinct major programs respectively, in Marketing and Management. 121 School of Business students participated in internships during this Academic Year. David Lewis’10, Max Smith’10, and Matt Stark’11, escorted and coached by Professor of Marketing and Management Raj Devasagayam, participated at the National Sales Competition, together with students from 20 other colleges and universities from across the Nation, held at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ in November 2009. Fourteen students, accompanied by Assistant Professor of Management Deborah Kelly visited Morocco in January 2010 as part of a Study Tour course, to learn about business and culture in that North African nation. The 21st Century Leaders Honor Society of the School of Business presented a check for $2,660 to the John Howe Library in Albany, New York to be used to purchase new books, materials, and technology for the library. Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) won 2nd runner-up at the Regional SIFE competition in March 2010.Participants included: Ashley Byrd ’10 Amanda Pilla’10, Tucker Reeks’10, Kelly Patricia’10, Jim Bulmer ’12, and faculty advisor, Assistant Professor of Management Deborah Kelly. In addition, 14 Siena SIFE students taught Junior Achievement classes in seven urban middle school classrooms during the Spring semester. The American Marketing Association student chapter, led by President, Danielle Neville’10, and Faculty Advisor, Assistant Professor of Marketing and Management Mike Pepe, participated in the 4th Annual Northeast Regional Conference in New York City, hosted by Pace University on November 21, 2009. The 5th Annual Siena College Student Conference in Business was held in April 2010 with 20 presentations and associated papers in four tracks: Economics / Management Information Systems; Marketing and Management; Finance and Quantitative Business Analysis; and Service Learning. Dr. James Nolan, Dean of Business, was the Keynote Speaker, addressing the topic, “Lessons in Leadership.” The Siena College School of Business Lecture Series brought six outstanding business leaders this year to campus to share their expertise with School of Business students, faculty, and staff. Three School of Business students, Peter Arndt ’11, Jenna Eckerle ’11, and Lindsey Paulsen ’11 and one ROTC cadet from the School of Liberal Arts, Jeffrey Bruneau ’10, escorted by Assistant Professor of Management Erik Eddy attended the 2010 Leadership Conference at the U.S. Naval Academy, in Annapolis, MD in January 2010. The theme of the conference was “Leadership Under Stress: Transforming Crises into Opportunities.” Tom Brokaw of NBC News was the Keynote Speaker at the Conference. The School of Business welcomes a new Dean of Business in July 2010, Dr. Jeffrey Mello, currently Professor of Management at Barry University in Miami, FL.
