Interpretation of the cultural symbol; Seven
The regularly exhibiting “Out of the Box” group have
chosen to explore seven as a theme. Culturally
seven has been a significant symbol, with themes
such as Seven deadly Sins, Seven Wonders of the
world, Dance of the Seven veils, etc…
The diversity of the theme is reflected in the
response by the individual artists to the group
theme. Subjects range from views of Melbourne,
interiors of a gallery, seven colour spectrums as
defined by Isaac Newton, seven sculptures from the
imagination and even an artist has challenged
herself to complete seven unfinished works…
Susan Gibson is painting her space, creating a suite
of seven works centring on interesting outcome for
her. It is a reversal of concepts. The artwork
becomes the art space.
After 50 years of residing in Melbourne, Eileen Gruen is creating seven love letters to her
adopted city. These unique vignettes are beautifully crafted in glass.
Lynette Joy is returning to her art practice for the first time since the tragic death of her
son. Her work explores the loss of this relationship. Joy references Ian Fairweather, Tony
Tuckson and most notably Klimt.
Virginia McNamara is using seven different mediums to extrapolate seven different
interpretations of a single hibiscus flower.
After working with master sculptor Graeme Foote at Hawthorn Studio Gallery, Kathy
Signarkis is creating seven intuitive sculptures that are a complete departure from her
previous arts practice.
Anne Warren has completed seven intimate still life’s in acrylic and pencil on birch board.
She is then using these works as a spring board to create seven new works that evolve
from the originals.
Beryl White is working with colour using the seven colours of the spectrum as defined by
Isaac Newton. These multilayered works in a variety of media represent just a snapshot,
