Media Release Seven Out of the Box Artists – Susan Gibson, Eileen Gruen, Lynette Joy, Virginia McNamara, Kathy Signarkis, Anne Warren, Beryl White, Evelyn Young August 26 – September 12, 2015 Interpretation of the cultural symbol; Seven The regularly exhibiting “Out of the Box” group have chosen to explore seven as a theme. Culturally seven has been a significant symbol, with themes such as Seven deadly Sins, Seven Wonders of the world, Dance of the Seven veils, etc… The diversity of the theme is reflected in the response by the individual artists to the group theme. Subjects range from views of Melbourne, interiors of a gallery, seven colour spectrums as defined by Isaac Newton, seven sculptures from the imagination and even an artist has challenged herself to complete seven unfinished works… Susan Gibson is painting her space, creating a suite of seven works centring on interesting outcome for her. It is a reversal of concepts. The artwork becomes the art space. After 50 years of residing in Melbourne, Eileen Gruen is creating seven love letters to her adopted city. These unique vignettes are beautifully crafted in glass. Lynette Joy is returning to her art practice for the first time since the tragic death of her son. Her work explores the loss of this relationship. Joy references Ian Fairweather, Tony Tuckson and most notably Klimt. Virginia McNamara is using seven different mediums to extrapolate seven different interpretations of a single hibiscus flower. After working with master sculptor Graeme Foote at Hawthorn Studio Gallery, Kathy Signarkis is creating seven intuitive sculptures that are a complete departure from her previous arts practice. Anne Warren has completed seven intimate still life’s in acrylic and pencil on birch board. She is then using these works as a spring board to create seven new works that evolve from the originals. Beryl White is working with colour using the seven colours of the spectrum as defined by Isaac Newton.
