India Fundraising Success
Last week, the Monifieth High School India team of 2012 handed over their
final donation of £2000 to Signpost International before the S6 pupils leave
school to follow new paths, which signifies the end to their three years of
dedicated support to the foundation. The group travelled to India in June 2012
with teacher Miss Hill and Depute Rector Miss Smith to visit Monifieth High’s
partner school RCM Vippendu, where they were involved in a variety of
projects including painting blackboards, supporting teaching at evening school,
planting trees and establishing a market garden. Since their return, the team
have continued to offer their support to the project by rigorous fundraising
activities. This final substantial donation by the 2012 team was raised from a
range of whole school fundraising events. The money will be used to maintain
the market garden that the pupils established on their visit and to support the
house building projects in the villages in which Signpost International works.
Monifieth High School has been working in partnership with Signpost
International, a development agency and charity which is based in the Hilltown
in Dundee for a number of years now and pupils have taken part in charity and
development visits to Uganda as well as the three successful trips to India. The
next trip to India is due to take place in 2014. Current S4 pupils have already
shown a lot of interest in becoming involved with this important project and
have already submitted applications. Interviews will be held after the exams
and successful pupils will then begin to explore what life in India is like, explore
their expectations and discover the reality of coping with poverty. Rigorous
fundraising will begin when the new team is in place. The project for the 2014
India team is to continue to support the evening schools in the village of rural
India and to work with the communities to build houses, which is in line with
Signpost International’s work in the villages.
If any local businesses would be interested in supporting the 2014 India team
and this important and worthwhile project, please contact Miss Smith or Miss
Hill at the school.
Well done to the team of 2012 for all your hard work and dedication, and best
wishes to the 2014 in maintaining support for the future.
