UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH 2015 DEPARTMENT OF DRAMA INFORMATION SHEET BA in Drama and Theatre Studies (3 years) SELECTION PROCESS AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS The selection process consists of two rounds. The first round of selection is based on the academic profiles of candidates and coherence to the Faculty’s admission requirements. The second round of selection is in the form of a personal audition and/or interview and is by invitation only. The admission requirements are the following: An average of at least 60% for the NSC (excluding Life Orientation); At least a 4 (50%) in each of four designated university admission subjects; Home Language at least a 4 (50%); and First Additional Language at least a 4 (50%). FOCUS OF PROGRAMME This three-year programme is aimed primarily at training well-informed, creative and well-equipped theatre practitioners and scholars, who can make a meaningful contribution to the theatre industry and related fields in the South African context. In the first two years the programme focuses primarily on drama or the theatre in the traditional sense of theatre as an art devoted exclusively to the stage. In the third year the training focuses also on the performing arts and the entertainment industry in the broader sense. The practical specialisation areas are underpinned by a strong theoretical basis, including text analysis, principles of theatre research, basic marketing and business skills. There are two areas of specialisation. AREAS OF SPECIALISATION Acting and performance training: Including: improvisation, acting, movement, voice and speech, stage make-up, playwriting, cabaret, puppetry, physical theatre, applied theatre, directing and/or acting for the camera and radio. Please note: This specialisation has compulsory Afrikaans components. Technical and management training: Including: stage and production management, décor, props, lighting, sound, costumes, design, makeup and video production. The following however are the compulsory requirements for preparation: 1. A monologue from a dramatic text OR: A prose extract (2 minutes maximum) 2. A short poem (2 minutes maximum) PLEASE NOTE: One of the pieces has to be in English and the other one in Afrikaans. Both pieces cannot be in the same language. Candidates have to be words-down. Selection Round 2 (Technical and Management Training): INTERVIEW Final details and arrangements about the personal interview will be sent out with the results of the first round of selection via e-mail. There is nothing that you can prepare for the interview.
