BA in Drama and Theatre Studies (3 years)
SELECTION PROCESS AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The selection process consists of two rounds. The first round of selection is based on the academic
profiles of candidates and coherence to the Faculty’s admission requirements. The second round of
selection is in the form of a personal audition and/or interview and is by invitation only.
The admission requirements are the following:




An average of at least 60% for the NSC (excluding Life Orientation);
At least a 4 (50%) in each of four designated university admission subjects;
Home Language at least a 4 (50%); and
First Additional Language at least a 4 (50%).
FOCUS OF PROGRAMME
This three-year programme is aimed primarily at training well-informed, creative and well-equipped
theatre practitioners and scholars, who can make a meaningful contribution to the theatre industry and
related fields in the South African context.
In the first two years the programme focuses primarily on drama or the theatre in the traditional sense
of theatre as an art devoted exclusively to the stage. In the third year the training focuses also on the
performing arts and the entertainment industry in the broader sense. The practical specialisation areas
are underpinned by a strong theoretical basis, including text analysis, principles of theatre research,
basic marketing and business skills. There are two areas of specialisation.
AREAS OF SPECIALISATION
Acting and performance training:
Including: improvisation, acting, movement, voice and speech, stage make-up, playwriting, cabaret,
puppetry, physical theatre, applied theatre, directing and/or acting for the camera and radio.
Please note: This specialisation has compulsory Afrikaans components.
Technical and management training:
Including: stage and production management, décor, props, lighting, sound, costumes, design, makeup and video production.

APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION
SELECTION PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS
To be considered for this programme, you must complete and submit (1) your Undergraduate
Application for Admission to the University and pay the application fee, and (2) complete and
submit the attached Personal Information Sheet so that it reaches the University on or before
15 August 2014.
The selection process consists of two rounds. You will be informed by e-mail about the results
of the first round of selection, based on the academic profiles of candidates, at the beginning
of September. Telephone enquiries about these results of the first round of selection can also
be made from 8 September 2014 (during normal office hours).
The second round of selection is in the form of a personal audition and/or interview that will
take place on Friday, 10 October 2014, and/or Saturday, 11 October 2014, at the Drama
Department of the University of Stellenbosch. The second round of selection is by invitation
only and compulsory for all candidates wishing to be considered for the BDram-programme.
You will be informed about the final results of selection by post and/or e-mail. Telephone
enquiries in this regard can be made from 27 October 2014 (during normal office hours) to
Mrs. Annatjie Moolman.

BILINGUAL ACTOR TRAINING:
Candidates should bear in mind that the BA in Drama and Theatre Studies is offered bilingually
(English and Afrikaans).

RESULTS OF THE SELECTION ARE FINAL:
No correspondence will be entered into after the announcement of the results of the selection.

Only the academic profile and personal information sheet of candidates will be considered for
the first round of selection, no CV’s or additional information. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM
INCLUDED SUCH INFORMATION.
SECOND ROUND SELECTION IS BY INVITATION ONLY AFTER COMPLETION OF THE FIRST
ROUND OF SELECTION. THE FOLLOWING IS FOR INFORMATION PURPOSES ONLY.
Selection Round 2 (Acting and Performance Training): AUDITION
Final details and arrangements about the requirements for the personal audition will be sent out with
the results of the first round of selection via e-mail. The following however are the compulsory
requirements for preparation:

A monologue from a dramatic text OR: A prose extract (2 minutes maximum)
2.
A short poem (2 minutes maximum)
PLEASE NOTE:
 One of the pieces has to be in English and the other one in Afrikaans. Both pieces cannot
be in the same language.
 Candidates have to be words-down.
Selection Round 2 (Technical and Management Training): INTERVIEW
Final details and arrangements about the personal interview will be sent out with the results of the first
round of selection via e-mail. There is nothing that you can prepare for the interview.
If you are in possesion of any of the following, you are welcome to bring it with you:

Because the Theatre Arts and Theatre Skills courses entail extensive physical involvement by
the student, any students with a medical condition (physical or psychological) that could
prevent them from participating regularly in movement, acting and/or Theatre Arts classes,
must indicate this prior to registration, with supporting documentation from a medical
practitioner, for consideration by the Department.
Students that miss 10% of classes due to a medical condition (physical or psychological) can
be declared medically unfit for the programme and can be asked to discontinue the
programme.
